The power switch on my 625 failed this past week (I couldn't turn the receiver on either via remote or the switch on the unit). Two questions. Is this a common problem? and will I need to replace the receiver every two years (I got this one new in October 2007)?

no, its not a common problem with them. I actually havent seen that happen before. The most common issue with those is them constantly reseting themselves which still isnt that common at all
