I have a very limited, metered Satellite internet connection. Both up and download is counted. How much data is consumed by hooking it up to my 722K. I will not be using it for the content just the diagnostics.

If your primary concern is diagnostic information and you have a land line, a modem connection is probably the better way to go.

The traffic is probably not more than hundreds of bytes a day and pretty much all of it is outbound. Much of the traffic is involved in reporting the Internet IP address of your router.

Any downloaded PPV content, advertising content, guide data and firmware comes from the TV satellites.

No land line. It would be connected just so it can report back to "home" the receivers health.
