a few questions about "moving"

I'm in Wisconsin and want to "move" to my parent's address in upstate NY, zipcode 13783.

I can see they are able to get msghd,yeshd,snyhd but i was wondering about local channels in hd. When i go to the local lookup for that zip it says there are no locals available - does that mean i would get NYC locals or no locals at all?

Would NYC locals make it to my dish in Wisconsin or are they on some spot beam?

Also, how does one pull off this "move?" Do i just call up and say "hey, i've moved - I'm in 13783 now and my dish is all hooked up and ready to go" then they take care of the rest?

"Moving" is easy, and you have the right idea.

You basically call and tell them that you have relocated, the dish and equipment is already hooked up and you need to change your SERVICE address to get the local programming. Make sure you leave your BILLING address as is. They should not give you any problems.

As to whether you are in the footprint for the spotbeam, I am not sure. Someone else will be able to help you with that though.

If nothing else, try it. If the locals do not come in, wait a day or so and move back.

I don't know the answer to the other questions, but when I 'moved' a few years ago all I did was call and say I moved my dish to my other house in West Virginia, and we hooked everything up ourselves. They did the change instantly, no questions were asked. After a year we 'moved' back to New Jersey, had the same conversation again. It was simple.

As far as the spot beam, you have to find out if the NYC spot beam reaches Wisconsin...not sure.

You will ONLY be able to get the "big 4" nets from NY - none of the other NY locals (either SD or HD) such as CW, PBS, etc will come in in Wisconsin...

If later i wanted to get back to wisconsin channels for some reason can i claim i have 2 houses and only stay at 1 etc. and get moved back and forth?

I would not mention two houses, that could get a little iffy
I would just tell them that I moved again. They do not need the details, and for the most part do not care

That would be only "if" Directv does not provide the locals AND he can not get a decent OTA signal to his "moved" address. If a decent OTA signal is available at that address, he would have to submit waivers for those channels.

Not for nothing but OTA channels from Binghamton wouldn't be possible, I'm sure there are some other cities that would be closer. What DMA is your parents location in?

Well that's a way to do it but wouldn't DirecTv catch on? Or do they really care?

If you get caught "moving" what will happen? Will they drop you as a customer?

Cable where I live absolutely stinks so that would suck.

True, it is a chance. Anyone that does this should know about it going in.
That said, it RARELY happens. In my estimation, D* knows fulll well what MOST people are doing when they randomly move and already have equipment hooked up. I simply think they do not care for the most part

they live maybe 30 miles SE of binghamton in delaware CO. and get locals from bingamton via cable. I don't know what their OTA reception is like.

Hmm, well then you're s.o.l. I live in Binghamton and "moved" to my grandfathers address on Long Island. I now get all the NYC locals without a problem. The OTA where I live can be iffy at times, I have a hill between me and a couple towers. Some channels I would get crystal clear and others would cut in and out constantly.
