I got this email this morning about a price increase for Amazon Prime Ad-Free. Enshitification continues.

So are the taking away the 4K and Dolby Atmos from the Prime Video included with your Prime Subscription? (Non ad free)
That seems to be the implication. I don't notice much of their content to include Dolby Atmos. Perhaps that will improve?

Thats what I was wondering as well.

I got that email as well ...
I turned mine off, when I watch Prime next, i'll turn it back on if its something available in 4k.

Haven't really watched much Prime in a while and I keep getting this $3.22 charge every month, it took a minute to realize what it was.

I have a 7.1 system that has little support. Why would I expect more from Atmos?

Yes that is what it says. They learned well from Netflix and HBO MAX.
So, essentially, if you want 4k or Ad Free on Amazon, your bill is going up $60 a year.
For something we already had.

Actually, if you had Ad Free your only going up $24.

Well, if you had it all year long, you might as well pay for the annual sub, which is a $10.11/yr increase
I just get tired of seeing it go up and up and up again.

I think it was $99 awhile back, then it went to $129, I now pay $139 .... + $3.22 or $38 for ad free p/m so thats now $177 ...

With the new plan Ad free will be $199 ... (plus tax ?)

There isn't a whole lot of things that aren't doing the same thing these days so it isn't just streaming services. It is corporate greed.

Maybe I am in the minority who thinks like this, but for me, Amazon Prime streaming doesn't feel like a streaming service because I subscribe to Amazon Prime for free shipping, and the streaming part is a bonus. (The only streaming I watch on Prime is the NFL, and the NBA if there is a Bulls game on - so maybe that skews my perspective). As long as the amount I pay each year is less than the amount of shipping I would have paid without the service, then I look at it as a win. And that is where Amazon Prime with the benefit of the free shipping feels different than other streaming services, such as Peacock, where I only get streaming.

Granted, if I start paying more for streaming than I would be getting in free shipping, I would seriously question if it is worth it...

This is Amazon were talking about, including Video.

I agree with what you were saying, but that doesn't mean we have to like it.

Agreed. It is the same with everything. They lure customers with low subscription prices as a loss leader, and then jack up the prices when they think they have enough of those customers locked in. This is happening with AI stuff now. The free tier won't be ad-free for long, and the paid tiers will start to go way up in price (and probably start to include limited ads at some point). In the meantime, people and companies will have gotten so used to having the AI functions, that it will be hard to give it up.

We sub to a lot of streaming services in my house because it is still collectively less than we used to pay for linear TV service, but only just, and it is convenient to not have to worry whether we have the service we need to watch what we want to watch. If our economic circumstances were to change, we would not do so. We would cut things and wait until there were enough shows to watch on a given service before subscribing. As it is, I find ways to save using discounted gift cards, annual subs, and choosing the non-UHD option on Netflix and HBOMax, but we will always choose the ad-free option as long as we can afford it. It takes effort to do that, and I do similar things with other services in my life, like mobile phones. Most people I know don't want to bother with the effort and just pay through the nose.

I am an annual subscriber for prime video, but could never get an annual subscription for the ad free. The letter says if you have an annual subscription for Prime , you can get an annual ad free. I called to get this deal and none of the agents have heard of this nor how to do the annual ad on. I was told to call back in April when this goes into effect.

I don't see a way either for the annual plan. Maybe you need to cancel it to see the annual subscription or like you say maybe it won't be available until closer to the April 10, 2026 effective date of the new price.

It is not available until April 10. You must have annual billing to Prime as a prerequisite. On April 10 or later go into your account and then manage subscription. You will have the opportunity to add Ultra for the annual price.
