So what you two are saying is there IS NOT going to be any forced, mandated, wholesale moving back to VHF for digital, after the 2009 analog shutdown?

no not at all. In the DC area WJLA will revert to 7 and WUSA will go back to 9. there is even talk that the low power station at Ch 49 will go to Ch 2 of all things.

Does anyone have any info on power? it would be nice ifa few local stations used a bit more and I am curious as to whether that is likely after they switch off the analog.

Actually not that many stations are going back to VHF, and less than a handful are going below channel 7.

ABC, and KTTV will be going to VHF
NBC will be staying put on UHF
CBS will be moving to a lower UHF

Thanks for the info Mike. Just a slight correction here.... 1.61 km = 1 mile.

Quick way to convert in ones head: Drop the last digit and multiply by 6 gives you a good approximation.

10 x 6 = 60miles approximately. (61 miles really)
