Fresh off its broadcast of The Masters golf tournament in 4K, DirecTV says it's now planning to offer Major League Baseball in 4K for the first time in the United States. Starting this Friday with the MLB Network Showcase game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, AT&T says that DirecTV will be showing 25 MLB broadcasts in 4K throughout this year's baseball season. The announcement comes on the heels of DirecTV launching three new channels for users than have upgraded to a 4K, UHD television.

DirecTV's push comes as most cable operators still struggle to offer traditional HD. Streaming video providers like Netflix and Amazon have lead the charge toward 4K, seeing it as one way to differentiate themselves from traditional cable. In turn, DirecTV hopes its embrace of 4K helps keep users from cutting the cord.

As noted previously, joining DirecTV's 4K revolution won't be cheap. To actually view the content, users first need to sign up for DirecTV's HR54 HD DVR, which requires a two-year contract. From there, users need to also connect it to a 4K Genie Mini, incurring a $50 charge if they have an installer visit.

Users also have to subscriber to one of DirecTV's two most expensive tiers to actually watch 4K content. Either DirecTV's Ultimate package (starting at $92 a month) or the company's Premier option (which starts at $145 a month).

That is great and wish they would of done the NHL Playoffs in 4K
