Looks like AT&T will do exactly what I thought they would do, charge extra for 4G. I doubt they will allow us unlimited 3G subs to get access to 4G unless we drop our unlimited plan and pay for the 4G plan.

  1. $30 Plan
    1. Plan name: 3G/4G Mobility Entry
    2. Term: MRC/30 day.
    3. Cost: $30.00
    4. Data: 5Gig
    5. Overage allowance: 5 cents per meg for total of 2Gig of overage
    6. Suspension: At 2Gig usage, further reduction in speed, but no suspension for WWAN

AT&T Leak: LTE Data Plans – iFans

No way I drop my unlimited 3G just to get 4G.
My next phone (iPhone5) probably will not be capable anyway.

I SOOO wish that the no contract vendors like Virgin and Boost Mobile could jump on these 4G networks. It's so frustrating that I am paying nearly $100 for phone service a month while my wife gets comparable service for just $25. Thing is I don't want to jump to another phone/provider since I like my Nexus One so much and I want my next phone to be a 4G phone. Maybe if that new $300 Android phone on Virgin is good I'll jump over to them for a little while..Hell I would be saving around $400 a year.. Wow that was really rambling. Back to work!

100% agree. I'll keep my unlimited 3g. It's plenty fast enough for me on a smartphone.

I technically have a unlimited 4G plan right now. I would love to be grandfathered into the LTE 4G plan because of it.

Somehow I think ATT will differentiate between 4G branded HPSA+ included in the current unlimited plans and true LTE 4G plans.

If I thought otherwise, I'd go out and get one of their current 4G smartphones just to be grandfathered in to unlimited 4G.

I agree but one could hope.

The 4 does not. It seems likely that the next one will regardless of LTE or not.

That is all I care about. If the next one does LTE and not HPSA+, I am not paying extra and losing my grandfathered package for it. I will just stick with 3G

I'd imagine that ATT will treat it like they did the 3G vs the original iPhone. If you get the newer phone, they will assume you will use the faster network and charge accordingly. It's possible that if the next iPhone does LTE that buyers will not have the option to forego a 4G data plan.

Then again, ATT might have a hard time charging extra for LTE 4G nationwide on any phone when their actual network role out is so limited. That being said, I believe some here have reported that Sprint has successfully been doing that, so who knows?

I get great data rates on my iPhone 4. There are places that my iPhone is faster than VZW LTE network download. That sad part is it never should given backhaul and network traffic is better.
