Back to back 100+ degree heat indices. Then an eight hour drive post race to get home. 1.5+ hour shorter drive being Sunday night and I gave 94 the finger and took 294. I did a quick weeding between NXT and Indycar's races. And working on the photos, but kind of tired. NE Ohio is bloody hot now too!
Long story short, this race got weird, and fast. Dixon and Veekay started near the back and managed to slot themselves into a pit strategy allowing a top 10 finish, with Dixon being a couple laps short of fuel of winner the race. Sloppy start. Then things calm down. Sting Ray Robb did his darn best to kill himself... again, panicking behind a slowing Malukas, hitting the wall and then tearing into the Turn 5 tire barrier. A solid whomp. Lundgaard was having a solid weekend until he was a bit too far outside on the exit to Canada Corner, which I was lucky to get on video. Veekay moved up, then back, then back up. Saw a great pass on McLaughlin into turn 5, which is where a lot of the action takes place. Like when he slowed up and lost a lot of positions when the turn jammed up and cars were everywhere. But after getting a set of reds, he tore through the field, passing a number of cars and with Rossi pitting (along with Dixon), got Veekay a 10th place. Could have been 9th, but Siegal passed him. Seemed like Veekay was on aging alternate tires. Ferrucci had an awesome race, if not easy to underexpose race car livery. He was fifth, but promoted to the podium when Rossi and Dixon needed to stop for fuel.
Palou would pull off the upset and win his first race since, what three races ago? Palou had the fuel, Dixon did not. I was in Turn 5 at times. Including when Conor Daly spun out, got a pull from the AMR crew, and then proceeded to drive off with the tow rope still attached to his car. He did a full lap with it attached... which led to a penalty. Josef Newgarden (and Penske in general) had a mediocre day. Newgarden crashed much like Jacob Abel did in the race warmup (while I was shooting 1/160 shots and just didn't have a chance of capturing Abel's spin), except Abel did crunch the tire barrier. I did catch Schwartzman's loss of control before heading up the hill to the start/finish line, in my first ever, do I duck for safety or get the shots. I did the later. Nothing happened except I got a couple real tight shots while shooting at 1/1500ish, thankfully. Just don't have time to change the shutter speeds.
And once again, Road America is bleeping awesome. It is a large park with a track. They've done a good deal of work here. You can traverse most of the track. Low fences with photography options everywhere! Canada Corner, if you don't mind standing next to the Port-o-Potty, you are about 10 or 15 feet from the cars making the turn. So many places for photos, almost all of the turns are accessible with no more than a 300 mm zoom. This time of year, you generally need to shoot in overcast or it'll be north to the west. If the race started at 4 PMish as originally scheduled, there would be even more options. That place is awesome. And not a terrible amount of walking. People say to use a golf cart, but I'd only do that if one can't manage the 5k to 10k of hiking. On Sunday, the Bluff was packed with golf carts.
