Bally Sports and MSG RSN Are Reportedly Preparing For Bankruptcy

Sure, but what are those ratings compared to anything else they put on their network?
It is not just the ratings, it is the right fees, paying a lot more for very little or negative returns.

Those inexpensive ( in comparison) game shows get a much higher rating, what is the more intelligent thing to do for a business, not what a sports fan wants them to do.

Cable/Broadcast Channels are dying, every year they lose about 6 Million per sub fees a year, advertisers are not going to pay top dollar for a dwindling audience, so a perfect storm on why they (stations/channels)are on life support currently.

Large markets have a problem also, I posted here last year, that Wheel of Fortune/Jeopardy receives 3-4 times the audience /ratings than the NYY did on YES.

The rights fees for those two shows are a lot less than the Yankees would be.
while all that is true, there are a lot of independent stations and stations that don't have viable programming that ANYONE wants to watch. I find it hard to believe that showing the SF Giants on KRON-4, instead of As Seen On TV paid-programming doesn't bring in net more revenue.

But those stations cannot afford the rights fees the Giants would want.

Again, limited returns, when those same independent stations are losing out on per sub fees and advertising revenue.

Would they receive more than those paid programming ads, then they would get from having MLB 6 months of the year?

And yes, it is a possibility that providers would be willing to pay a increase in per sub fees, if that station has the Giants, there is a possibility they will not either, see Dish Network for one example, or even YTTV, who has grown to 12M subscribers, without RSNs, why would they pay a increase, when it has been proven they do not need them.

This is not the same world as it was just 8 years ago, cable/broadcast/independent channels are losing power everyday, streaming has won.

This year, the United States has approximately 133M households, yet only 66M subscribe to a Live TV Service, that means there are more in the United States that do not have a Live TV Service, then do.

Yes in Phoenix the NBA Suns went to channel 3 for games. Instead of reruns they have them, a small collage GCU. They are part of Gray Media, which also owns the CBS affiliate in Phoenix. The way I see it is some money is better than no money!

The problem is, FanDuel tried to do this dual model, streaming at $20 a month, along with being a cable channel.

What happened was, only about 200,000 signed up for the online offerings, for all areas combined, along with losing per sub fees with the linear channels.

Why will this be different, will YTTV start carrying the channel, Dish/Sling maybe, will Comcast put them in the lower tier, instead of the upper tier, where not as many subscribe to?

Along with the continued erosion of DirecTV, Comcast, Charter, the main 3 providers that carries the RSNs, there is just no future for such channels.

The bottom line is, regular season sports receive awful ratings, not enough subscribers care or wish to spend money on it.

I think the difference here is this is just a branded version of Padres.TV or Cardinals.TV offered by MLB, but unlike those where you pay $20/mo for one team, you'll theoretically get both teams for $20. Sadly, there's no real overlap between hockey and baseball seasons, so it's entirely in theory except for a small window in March/April.

I'd be more impressed if the Pistons joined and you got Wings + Pistons for that price.

FanDuel failed because their app was terrible and they tried to charge per team when the channel itself usually had more than one team

What price are you seeing for the Tigers games ?

I'm seeing $189 for the year for the Tigers as Way too much, I really don't cvare about the Red Wings (even though they are playing well).

MLB.TV is $149 for the rest of the teams.
Tigers want $189.

If I go on MLB.TV I see MLB for $149 + a Local team for a Total of $199 (so they are charging $50 for the local team) Thats not bad ...
But I was on the phone with MLB today, thier Service reps are all from foriegn countries ... at least the tiomes I have called.

So, basically the guy from MLB said, MLB .TV will be $149, you want Tigers thats $189 for a total of $350 (plus tax).

I asked why the other teams were available for $199 then ...
He said he didn't know and to Call back some other time.

Meanwhile, I was trying to wait to see how the Tigers would shake out and MLB went ahead and charged my CC for MLB.TV already.

If the Tigers cost me another $50, I'm fine ... if it cost me another $189, I'm NOT.

I'm presuming the two will have a pacakge for either team separately, but I have heard Nothing about that.

I know, hurry up and wait.

Have you tried to contact the organization? They might not know the price but may know the plan? Its getting mighty close to opening day.

Shows 189.99 for the year. Tigers and Red Wings
Now there are some areas in ohio and Indiana that won't get the Wings. So maybe that price is different.
What price does it show when you put your zip code in? I'm referring to MLB.tv

Detroit ( and the others) are charging what they believe fans will pay, along with what they believe it needs to be profitable.

If too much for anyone, do not pay, it is not a necessity, but to just be complaining about it, over and over, such a waste of time.

If I were you I would cancel that subscription and wait to see if the $199 option becomes available for the Tigers before opening day. If you don't they may not allow you to just add the $50 later if it becomes available.

That was My thought too ...
Do you mean contact the Detroit Tigers ?
No I haven't .

As for MLB, yes, several times (for anyone needing to contact them, no one answers till after 12 EST)

Ok ... then are you paying for it, I know you follow the Detroit teams.

What you say is complaining is Letting people know what to expect that may be in the same situation as I am.

There are Plenty of people up here that are Tigers fans up here that Need to be able to get thier finances for such a thing situated and there are plenty that don't want to pay MORE for 1 team than the WHOLE League ....

They are not the Yankees or Dodgers where you have the largest market in the world.

This is what you get when you put your Zip Code in:

Live regular season games involving the following Clubs are subject to MLB.TV blackouts in the specified zip code unless local streaming products are available:

  • Cleveland Guardians
Local Streaming Available: users can access Guardians games in this zip code by authenticating with a valid pay TV subscription or by purchasing a subscription from MLB (subject to national exclusivities).
  • Detroit Tigers
Local Streaming Available: users can access Tigers games in this zip code by authenticating with a valid pay TV subscription or by purchasing Detroit SportsNet from MLB (subject to national exclusivities).
  • Cincinnati Reds
Local Streaming Available: users can access Reds games in this zip code by authenticating with a valid pay TV subscription or by purchasing Reds.TV from MLB (subject to national exclusivities).

They've updated this now, it shows purchasing Detroit SportsNet from MLB ... So it looks like MLB is the only place to look for info (I believe when I try to go to Detroitsportsnet, it takes you to MLB website)

I was thinking about that too, but I'll have to look and see if I am allowed to Cancel MLB, now that its been paid.

I've asked them specifically how much the Tigers were (letting them know I already have MLB.TV) they come back with the same answer ... $189 ... which I think is ridiculous seeing every other team is about $50.
