Bell ExpressVU testing MPEG4 stream on 82W

It looks like Bell ExpressVU is joining the DishNetwork and DirecTV crowd. They have started testing some engineering only channels (not available to subs) on 82W today on transponder 23.

They tested some 8PSK last year on 82w. 8PSK will only give them a little less than a 25% gain. MPEG4 will give them about 50%. I say do both!

Yes 8PSK in a few months as 75% of HD users already have receivers for it.

And Mpeg4 for 2009 as no users have any receivers capable of receiving it;
and they can't wait that long to increase capacity to stay competitive.

Their "inside" people 'claim' they have NO MPEG4 encoders, so could they be fooling with the MPEG4 flag?

I am not sure if it is still there but it was an unencrypted mpeg4 HD stream of color bars. there were also some smaller bit rate mpeg4 streams but they were encrypted.

According to an agent of CSR of Express Vu, you can now upgrade your receiver during the contract WITH NO PENALTY...for receivers in rental.

Maybe it's another sign for MPEG 4 HD channels.

I wouldn't read too much into this. Expressvu tested 8PSK last year and still haven't announced plans for it's implementation.

Yeah but they have no choice for MPEG 4 because they will go out of transponder space in a couple of months.

Thats because ExpressVU's satellites could not handle the power needed by 8PSK and this is why the 8PSK test was discontinued (or so I am told)

I just talked to a friend and I am hearing ExpressVu is planning to launch a suite of MPEG4 HD channels this fall. Folks who want these channels will be able to upgrade their MPEG4 receivers (which they will have to pay for).

There is no timeline for converting existing MPEG2 HD channels to MPEG4. They want to slowly phase in MPEG4 and hope that many upgrade on their own.

It's a good move from Bell if you can upgrade your MPEG 2 receivers in rental for a MPEG 4 with no penalty.

How much do you think EV will charge for an upgrade if your receivers was not in rental ?

digiblur, are you messed with some other tests ( those 206-x channels) ?

Lucky for me I threatened to leave a couple of months back and secured a sweet deal to stay which consisted of a note on my account that I will not be charged to upgreade to MPEG 4
