I currently pass the audio from my HR-22 with a HDMI cable to my LCD-TV, and then output the analog audio from the TV to a stereo amplifier (no digital input on amp).

Would I see much of an improvement if I used the optical digital audio output (from either the TV or the HR-22 itself) and passed that into a Dolby Digital amplifier? Obviously I would get surround sound on certain shows, but if I stayed with a 2.1 speaker setup, is there much improvement from analog to dolby digital?

Thanks!

That would depend on the speakers, if they're better than the TVs speakers it would be an improvement. You must run the optical from the DVR to the amp, not the TV. 2.1 usually means you have a subwoofer and 2 speakers that would be a big improvement.
