If I need the internet in order to watch TV, why wouldn't I just use the internet and not watch TV at all.

Great Reply from Lon!
Luckily my area will most likely never get ATSC 3.0.
I did not know they plan on killing ATSC 1.0. Will this be done in my lifetime (I am 74)?Then you may have no OTA at all. Not sure that's "lucky."

If they get there way it will be very soon. They want ATSC 1.0 out of the way so they can force ATSC 3.0 (with DRM intact) down our throats.![]()
The only audience that really matters to them is those who subscribe to cable providers or via streaming platforms. They go where the money is. Who cares about some people watching OTA in rural areas? They don't pay the bills. If they go to a closed platform, it'll reduce their audience count anyway. My feeling is that ATSC 1.0 is going to be around for a while. The Nextgen coalition want the FCC to sunset ATSC 1.0 broadcasts by 2028 in major markets but I don't believe the FCC will do that. They are more likely to allow broadcasters to turn off their ATSC 1.0 simulcast at their own discretion. But with the lack of devices that support ATSC 3.0 I don't see many broadcasters doing this. They would be shutting down their audience and I don't see them doing that.

The advertisers care about all of the people that are watching. All viewers are potential customers, not just the ones that are paying to receive the program. The only audience that really matters to them is those who subscribe to cable providers or via streaming platforms. Not all people are customers. They don't care about the grandmas or grandpas living on social security out in the boonies who can't afford a hot tub or a Generac generator. They're focused on the paying customers because those are likely the ones with disposable income that can afford whatever is advertised. Like I said, they wouldn't be going to a closed system if they cared about shutting out many people. To them, cancelling out one pirate is worth shutting out a bunch of people if it means they can keep their monopoly with the paying customers and continue to set higher transmission/broadcast rates. The advertisers care about all of the people that are watching. Broadcasters are seeking a sunset date for ATSC 1.0. it hS not been approved. Remember it will not affect reception by cable or satellite.I did not know they plan on killing ATSC 1.0. Will this be done in my lifetime (I am 74)?
