I've got a SL5, but I'm wanting to clean up what the D* installer did when he installed my setup. I've decided to change my SL5 LNB head out to the single wire SWM setup. I purchased the SWM 5 LNB head, the 21V power inserter, and a 4 way splitter (will upgrade that shortly). Is this all I need to convert my current setup to SWM?

you can combine ota signals if needed. i did, it works flawlessly.

Yep, should be fine - I assume you know if ALL your receivers are actually SWM compatible, right???
Yep, all my receivers are SWM compatible. I did check that. Thanks for your input guys.

One more question....I know that I only have to run one line to my DVR's, but apparently it's like taking up two spots on the splitter, correct? An example...say I have a 4 way splitter and will run two DVR's off it. I run one line to each DVR, which means two lines are running from the 4 way splitter but I actually have two phsical spots left to run lines. What happens if you try to run another line off the splitter because phsically you can but you can't because the two DVR's are technically using all 4 spots? Is that clear as mud? :D

if you still have two outputs from the splitter you can use them for two more dvr's if you like. the swm lnb supports 8 tuners. each dvr counts as two.

do you have the swm lnb?
No. I only have 4 lines so I do not need a multiswitch.

I was wondering if using the swm do you simply connect your antenna to the swm and you no longer need a separate coax going to your OTA tuner on your receiver?

Also, do these receivers has a single swm port? My HR20-100 only has the two satellite coax and one OTA coax port

i don't use the the swm8 or 5 either. i also have the swm lnb. you take the one cable coming from the lnb and connect to a diplexer. connect the ota cable there too. the one output from the diplexer goes to the block or the sws4 that came with the swm lnb. use diplexers where you have your receivers and dvr's. very simple.

I see, the swm is built into the lnb??? You connect your OTA coax and your satellite coax into a diplexer? And from there you run a single coax wire to the swm port of your reciever??? Is that correct?

So....a 4 way splitter will run 4 non-DVR receivers OR 4 DVR receivers?

Hypothetical here.....say someone has an SWM LNB and an 8 way splitter. They run 4 DVR's.....so, that maxes out the SWM LNB? What if they want to add another DVR or standard tuner somewhere down the road? Technically, there are 4 spots left on the splitter? What happens then?

Sorry for all the flippin questions....just trying to cover all my bases and make sure I fully understand SWM technology.

yes and you need a diplexer at the location of the dvr to separate the ota and sat signal. you can get 4 of these diplexers for about 5 bucks on ebay. that what i paid. if you have what the op posted above then you're set to combine your ota signals over the one coax.

You run your satellite coax and your OTA antenna coax to a SWS from there a single line runs to the diplexer. You then run one coax from the diplexer to your OTA tuner and another to the satellite tuner on your receiver.

You no longer need two separate coaxs going to the two ports on your receiver?

a 4way will run 4 dvr's . i'm not sure on the 8 way if 8 dvr's can be attached.

you don't as long as you have the lnb in the 1st post. here's more info : http://hr20.dbstalk.com/Slimline SWM ODU LNB First Look.pdf

Cool. Only 1 wire per DVR. That is nice....

In the case of DVRs, only one line is needed, connecting to the SWM RF connection the IRD would take two of the eight available channels for the two tuners within the IRD.

You still need a separate coax for the the OTA tuner, right? 2 wires are better than 3.
