I am looking at canceling my cell phone plan because i found that with another carrier i would be paying about $20 less with the same plan, but I dont want to pay the $200 cancellation fee. Does anyone know a way to get around this?

Yes, check your current providers coverage map and find a location that they dont cover, if the provider cant supply you with service in the new location your going to "move" to then that voids your contract on their end. Do this in a location where you know someone, Montana, N/S Dakota, Idaho, Wyoming are locations this would work best in.

If you try that with Verizon, they will nicely point out the part of the contract that you signed that says they do not guarentee service.

Left them anyway...

I called sprint and told them that i was going to cancel because it would be easier to pay the 200 and get a new plan with someone else than pay the $20 dollars extra every month. They gave me a $10 credit for 6 months on my account. Well its not much its a start.

Sprint will cancel out your contract if you move to an area that doesnt have service, I was close to moving to Montana a three years ago and called them about it and they said that since I was going to move to an area that didnt have service they would close out my contract.

AT&T required a piece of mail with ur name and the new address on it dident matter wat, if you still need help gettin g out let me know in a pm and i can get it done.

verizon phone that they didnt want me to cancel, even though i had actually moved to an area where their service was HORRIBLE. I just set the phone to roam only, and after a couple months they cancelled me...
if you move outside of their service area, and you are roaming... you are costing them money

Sprint/Nextel continues to lose customers. You might well be ahead of the game to move on now.

You can look at CellSwapper.com, they offer a way to transfer the contract to someone else. I am not sure of all the details, but worth a look if you want out. :)

You know I waste more money going the casino or simply planning a vacation than I would spend paying a cancellation fee on a cell phone or even a satellite system.

So many people are so set agenst breaking a contract, they don't realize the cancellation fee really isn't that much when you think about it.

Its like yesterday I had an issue with sprint on my wireless laptop card. Finally got pist off and told them I wanted to cancel and then the rep tells me there is a $200 cancellation fee. I just laughed and said it was worth it not to deal with sprint anymore!

Its not really the 200 dollars that pisses me off, its just that ill have to buy another phone with the new company that i get and since i need a smartphone it will be a total price of 500-600 dollars to switch when it should be 300-400.

It might be possible to use your current phone with your new carrier. Check the new carries phone offerings to see if your old phone is listed. You can even reprogram your phone with the new carriers software in some cases. I flashed my Verizon phone with Altells software to unlock many extra features. Exactly what I just did. Verizon service at home was constantly dropping like crazy, they kept saying my phones were bad, and had to get new ones, Yes, All 4 of my active phones should be replaced, it was not their problem. So I just ported all numbers to at&t, and payed the fees... It was so worth it...

I am with Sprint too. Sprint announced last year that they are going to start pro-rate the termination fee this year, but so far they have not done it yet. My contract is up in Sept, so maybe I will just wait before I switch. jgags6, if you are going to take their $10 per month offer for 6 months, make sure they do not extend your contract for 2 years!
