I'm very curious to see if I did something to disable the CC on my CS5K.

I see there are programs that I feel pretty sure should have CC but the Caption box at the bottom of the screen in Audio (when I press the green button) gives me all sorts of info and choices, but the closed caption is grayed out at "OFF."

I have gone through the menu step by step but can't find anything to turn it "ON".

What did I miss?

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure its not your tv? My CS5k has no menu item to set CC on/off. It just passes through if there is a signal. My pansats do have the feature. Same thing happened to me a while back and it turned out my daughter had disabled it on the tv.

No, it isn't the TV. The feature IS turned on on the TV. I seem to remember *something* when I first got the CS5000, and I *seem* to remember something about Closed Caption, but for the life of me, as much as I have searched through the menu items, I cannot find anything about the CC.

And I know these programs I am watching are supportive of CC. It shows up on the CNX DUO, even when I slave the DUO from the CS.

Thank you for responding, hopefully we'll BOTH learn something, eh?

Yes, as I said in my original post, I see that too, but it is grayed out. I can't get into it.

I started wondering, I DO seem to remember seeing that when I first got the CS5000, but now that I think back on it, I had hackware on this machine when I first put it on line, so it's possible that I don't HAVE that anymore, since I have updated to later true firmware.

Oh well, it was worth asking for.

Maybe Iceberg can step in and say some thing, eh?

What firmware revision are you using now?

Have you tried this firmware?

EDIT:

Oh.. It appears you are using this already:

Maybe you could ask in the guestbook on the web site where you get the pirate software that has been sanitized and improved.

By the way, downloads from that site appear to be failing... Maybe DN issued a DMCA takedown order...Second EDIT: looks like http://www.fileave.com/ is down... (at least for me it is)

In addition, my receiver where the closed caption setting is working has obsolete firmware as received from an eBay seller...

I have NO IDEA what was on it when I first got it. I sanatized it within days, and since it was something I didn't want in the first place, there was no reason to record what HAD been on it.

I'll live with it this way.

Possibly, since the CS firmware is now open source, someone will add CC to it, eh? One can always dream.

And thanks for the thoughts.

.. since the CS firmware is now open source....

Was the firmware copyrighted? Who owns (or owned) rights to the firmware?

Some Koreans?
JinHighTek Corporation?
Coolsat USA?
The current owner of Coolsat USA's assets?

Come on guys!...... Sanitized ..... Not Sanitized???? What we are talking about here is the theft of services by the viewer, not what firmware is loaded on the receiver. Firmware does not steal service, it only enables the viewer to do so......

:shocked
The "3rd Party" firmware released for the intention of Theft of Service originates from the same source as "Factory Firmware". Sometimes the only difference is that the "Factory Firmware" OSD hides the "3rd Party" features that are still in the firmware. Somehow the myth started that there are shady 3rd party developers working in some dark alley and hacking factory firmware files to make them do something that they weren't designed to do.....

:eureka
Receivers use chipsets that are designed for reception of both unencrypted and encrypted services. Engineers are hired by the factories and by OEM purchasers to develop function and features based on the needs of their market. The decryption function can be developed for legit purposes such as the GEOSATpro with CAS and Cardless BISS. The functionality that we seek in GEOSATpro receivers for legal reception of subscribed services could be exploited for less than honorable purposes.

With Dish Network has adopting new security routines and their transition to MPEG4, you can be pretty much assured that you will not, even by accident, illegally view any encrypted programming on your Coolsat 5000 or any other DVBS receiver. If you have any concerns about perceived improprieties while using a "Non-Factory File", just place zeros in the entry fields.... :D

CC on CS6000P

Brian, thanks for that. I've found that the clock and some other features of the CS6000P work better with "after market" software.

Never had CC working on it but found Progdvb does CC pretty good.
