I'm going to be wiring up the house this fall / winter to get rid of all the external wiring mess and I figured that I would run cat6 along with the coax to build a wired network to get off of wireless internet to make things more secure. Currently the house has three bedrooms plus a sun room a living room a kitchen and an attached garage and two bathrooms. The living room will end up with 3 locations, all three bedrooms with 2, kitchen with 2, garage with 2, sun room with 1, and maybe one for the patio and a hook up for the future from sun room.

So where is a good place to get a 1k ft box of coax and one of cat6?

Some years ago I bought the same two rolls at Home Depot.
It was Cat5 (non-plenum) and RG59 at that time. Under $100 for each (1000').
It turned out to be decent cable, all but one longest run supports Gbps.

Get good crimping tools.

Diogen.

You could check out some of the electrical supply companies in your area and, of course, HD and Lowe's.

Gonna go with monoprice on a throw away CC, HD and L are pricey to and want for 500ft what Mono wants for 1000ft. When its all said and done I'll save enough to get a 16 port hub plus a set of splitters. The biggest problem I will have is fishing the lines through a vaulted ceiling cavity and then down an external wall cavity but it shouldn't be to bad.

If you go with all the troubles to fish the wires, make sure you run spares, especially Cat6.
For example, two of those can run HDMI if needed. If not now, maybe later.

I would go with a 16 port switch instead of a hub. You want all connections to be allowed the same bandwidth and you don't get that with a hub.

Gotcha, and that should be an straight forward connection to the cable modem or will I still need to get a router?

You still need a router for a firewall and to give out IP addresses.

I can't see the first link from newegg, it is blocked at work for some reason. It is redirecting through another site.

You can VPN through your router so a VPN device should not be needed anyway.
All the other stuff looks good. I prefer to use D-Link for a router just because of how much better it is for Xbox 360 but Netgear is good too.

Here it is.

ZyXEL Internet Security Appliance / ZyWALL 2 Plus

I don't have a 360 at the moment but if D link is better suited for consoles then I will look at it. If the d link router and switch will be more than adequate for security then I will stick with that and follow the directions for setting it up. Time to go check out d link routers.

That site is the one blocked. I will look at it when I get home.

Going into garage with power access within easy reach and attic access right there as well for running all lines. Only thing that I may have an issue with is cox and locating all of their stuff in the garage as opposed to it being outside now but I want to have all the cabling inside and the splitters and such inside as well and run all new stuff since they would rather barrel the hell out of their lines.
