Dallas locals OTA

Seriously considering dumping FiOS due to the cost and going with a TiVo with an OTA antenna as well as going to cable internet vs the FiOS internet again due to cost.

According to Antennaweb the farthest station away (WFAA) is about 39 miles away meaning I need a green antenna. I'm looking at the HBU22 model from Solid Signal.
TVFool.com is having some issues. Antennaweb states that all of the channels are to the SW of me.

Thoughts?

Have you moved since your post on 2/18/12? At that time after 6 pages of discussion you were going to order a Channel Master 4228 or an HBU55 to replace you HBU33. If your still at the same address a HBU22 won't work.

Neutron how many TV's? I had the HBU22 set up when I lived in Minneapolis and it worked fine. Was 29 miles away from the towers. Here in Duluth I'm about 5 miles away so yeah it really works

The only VHF you have is 8 (unless you really want MundoFox) and if I remember right the UHF portion of the HBU22 & 33 are the same. The VHF portion on the 33 is longer

Your right Iceberg he has 8 & 9 from Dallas for VHF if he is far enough North CH 12 from Sherman may also be possible.12-1 is CBS 12-2 CW and 12-3 is FOX I have gotten ch 12 from Carrollton on the back side of an antenna. From most of the North Dallas area about 70 channels should be available. Problem can be reflected signals and the HBU 22 may not be too good for that. That is why I asked for zip code.

I have what I believe is that exact antenna and pick up channels from 45 miles away just fine.

You might want to consider DVR+ from Channel Master instead of Tivo. Tivo has a monthly charge and the DVR+ doesn't. It has two tuners so you can record 2 programs or watch 1 and record another. The program guide goes out a week (with Internet.) We use it on our RV. The only downside I see it that it doesn't have a record series option.

75034 Frisco not far from Plano, puts you far enough north to have little reflected signal problems and Sherman stations are almost 180* from the Dallas stations. 75013 Actual Plano zip code 39 miles from WFAA is pretty free from reflected signals but Sherman station goes to 2 edge status. Antenna Specialist HBU-22 should work also at Solid Signal you might look at Winegard HD-1080.

75098 is the zip code our address resides in. I'm on the western side of it though closer to Plano.

TVFool shows all of the locals relevant to us to be in the Green and LOS.

I dont understand why boba keeps bringing up KXII in Sherman when there is a CBS in Dallas. I guess if KXII has some really good local programming not see on KTVT Dallas (or if you really want to know what is going on in Sherman/Ada) there is no need to try and pick it up

I would prefer the Dallas CBS over the Sherman/Ada/Ardmore one... Way too much storm interruption on KXII this time of year.

I know KXII-DT2 (My Network) has Texas Rangers games...but those are simulcast from TXA21 in Dallas (which is in HD)

KXII isn't a fantastic station but it does offer some different programming from KTVT. And if it is free just for having the right antenna/ location why not receive it. Besides that one channel adds FOX & CBS. With 75098 KXII becomes a 2 edge signal and doubtful worth attempting.

You can get a Tivo Series 3 with lifetime for around the price of the DVR+ (and on the DVR+ you need to add your own hard drive)

looking at tvfool for his zip its 70 miles away in the opposite direction. So in that case he would need a separate VHF antenna or a rotor. I don't think his HBU22 would cut that.
I did the same thing when I live din the house. KEYC Mankato was 72 miles away in the opposite direction of the Minneapolis stations. They had a couple local programs that I wanted so I got a separate VHF antenna and combined that with the UHF antenna I already had. The drawback was my Fox & NBC from Minneapolis (9 & 11 respectively) the signal was low and would cut out any time there was bad weather (and even in good weather it would cut out)

Besides that one channel adds FOX & CBS.

I think I finally convinced the wife that this is what we should do to help cut back on expenses. Even with dropping FiOS TV/Internet and going with cable internet and even the monthly TiVo fee if we can't find a good deal on lifetime we would still be saving about $50 a month, and I could pipe in the locals to the other two TVs in the house which just have Rokus on them now.
