I'm sure this must have been talked about but I thought I would post my thoughts since I finally got MPEG4 locals and have OTA for quite a long time.
I took a quick peak at NFL football on Fox OTA and Fox MPEG4 and both were pretty poor but similar in appearance. I had hoped as the quality went up they would remain equal.
Unfortunately they did not...I recorded Jericho OTA and on MPEG4. I tried Jericho because its on CBS and they usually have the best quality.
Off the sat the picture is softer and macroblocks anytime there is a transition in picture that involves movement.
Still images look great, but anything with movement looks subpar.
I wouldn't call it acceptable in comparison to OTA and if this was my primary way of viewing local HD's I would be calling and complaining.
It is not nearly as good as the other HD channels on Dish.
I plan on recording Cold Case and some others off of both and comparing, plus trying a few other channels to see how it works.
How do other MPEG4 locals compare to OTA?
