Last night I was prompted to install a software update for my HR21 receiver. I had not heard anything about a software update coming out and have been unable to find any information about it. Just wondering if anybody knew anything about it and what it actually updated. Thanks

Unfortunately I don't have access to my receiver right now so I'm not sure of the update number.

0x312 - Really Slow?

I have both an HR-20 and an HR-21 and noticed they were both outrageously slow today. (Outrageously slow means about 2 or 3 times worse than "normal" slow. For example, after hitting the list button, it took more than 5+ seconds to see a blue screen and another 5+ seconds to see the list of programs recorded. Much longer for bringing up the menu.) I checked the system settings and noticed both boxes received a software update (0x312) overnight.

I restarted the HR-20 (red button) to see if it helped. The first time I pressed the list button after restarting, there was no improvement. However, it seems better since then - i.e. mostly back to "normal" slow we are all used to. However, it is a bit inconsistent, as sometimes it is slower than others.

I too got this update, but i didn't really notice anything different. I guess that's good. I'm just glad I didn't loose any recording or timers.

Any time you have a reboot, the system does a disk check. If the disk check doesnt work out and cant be recovered from, it'll zap the file system to reset the contents and start from scratch.

So the wiped drive might be a function of a failing drive along with a reboot rather than the software update itself.

I have seen some times when the e-sata shows nothing, and a cold boot (shut both off for a while, then start the esata, then the receiver) brings back a playlist.

When do receivers prompt you to download an update ? I've never seen that happen before.

It's happened before, but I haven't seen this in several years, I don't think it's anything to worry about, you would get it eventually anyways, D* normally d/l's updates over night, without anyones authorization.

Many of the NR updates are downloaded and done in the middle of the night. When Directv finds a major issue that could cause a customer outage, or they're aware of something coming along in a few days that could be a problem, they're able to do a 'force update' which downloads and applies immediately, pending asking you if you're willing to let it do so right away. If no remote control activity is detected for a certain period of time it applies immediately.

A few too many of these for my taste. We had a bunch of them a little while back when they changed the guide data and it was causing a lot of their receivers to reboot or freeze. "Hurry up and download this before this other thing causes stuff to start blowing up!!!" is a very poor implementation strategy.

Under the hood stuff, things you wouldnt see from a user perspective. Your box might not crash or fail to record a program sometime in the future as a result of the fixes.
