I'm a renter that includes the basic level of Directv with monthly rent and really want a DVR but landlord is unsure. I want just very basic, even if I have to manually record programs, 20 hours would be plenty. Can I skip calling Directv and use a Tivo or other after market DVR? ALSO: any streaming features do not apply (satellite internet). What are my options? Thanks in advance. Pete

You need a Directv dvr, one model has TIVO software. It's an older model though and I wouldn't recommend it. You could add a recorder to the outputs, but that would be cumbersome, only recording what channel the dvr is set to. It should cost $10/month extra. Have him contact Directv since he is the account holder.

if its a rental the account owner would have to request a dvr
if its a commercial account, they may not even be able to get one

Thanks for all the help. I knew I forgot to mention something, only one TV. It is actually a winter ski home.
If its not an MDU, but a single dwelling rental home, then you may call DIRECTV for a single DVR installation.

But you must have the LL's permission of course, to allow the installation to go forth which involves mounting the dish and everything else necessary ...

depends on the dish they have, and the receiver
and what receiver you get

the account holder needs to do all this
as they need to agree to new costs and contract

I have her permission but she will not give me account info so I'm scrambling for info. Why would I need a new dish?
Give us a bit more information ...
What recvr are you currently using ?
Is it HD or SD ?
If you go to the menu, you can find this info, the dish type will also be listed.

I'm guessing you have a regular Directv recvr at the moment ?

Menu, Settings, Info and Test ... Info.

Oh wait, you don't want info from a Buckeye fan .... you must be a TTUN fan.
