yes you can add one
replaces the existing internal drive
folks have used 3 TB drives recently
programming on drive stays with receiver. If receiver dies, you lose stuff on hard drive

Would discussion on how to circumvent that inane restriction violate the no hack talk policy? Seriously, why wouldn't they let you move the hard drive to a new IRD. That's just mean.

Talk away! I would caution anyone about replacing an internal hard drive since that might put you on the hook for the cost of the dvr. Apparently a software change would allow moving an external hard drive from one dvr to another, but for whatever reason, Directv has chosen to not make that an option. Unless you can write code for the dvr, I don't see a way around it.

One thing Im not real fond of is the increased price of additional boxes, now If a cust wants a 34, and 3 24/25s its gonna cost them an extra 299, where yesterday it would have been an extra 99... I see what they are doing however, previously a hddvr and 3 hds was 5 tuners, and a genie is 5 tuners, 2 of which would be for the dvr if all 3 are watching live tv. I think I liked the old promo better. Anyone know when this ends? Might be better off waiting for the next promo for free equipment :( Im not sure I want to order extra DVRS now :(

*Limit three remote viewings per Genie HD DVR (model HR34 Advanced Whole-Home DVR) at a time. Remote viewing requires a model C31Client, H25 HD Receiver(s) or RVU-enabled TV/device in each additional room, a SWiM network and Advanced Receiver Service ($20/mo.) To access HD programming, HD television equipment also required.

Wait, what?!?! $20/month Advanced Receiver Fee?!?! Without WatchESPN, TWC Sportsnet, and Pac12 Network AND a $20/ARF, this is starting to sound like cable.

heck I battle myself in the house with the 5 tuners sometimes. Tomorrow I have like 8 things at one time I want to record...guess the race, the college football and hockey games get priority and the series stuff gets shifted to late night
I have a HTPC with 4 tuners for OTA. I just got an 8 bay antenna off Amazon. I record all of my ABC NBC CBS FOX shows on the HTPC so I've got 5 tuners always open for satellite channels. I just got the HR-34, I'm loving it. I would definitely have issues if all I had was the HR-34 though.

That fee is the following
$8 DVR fee
$3 whole home DVR fee
$10 HD fee

you get a $1 discount then if you have auto pay the $10 HD is waved

I would have the same issue with the this system as the Hoppa, all your eggs in one basket. The main unit goes down and you are sol. If you can get two main units as you easily can with the Hoppa that would make a difference. But my question would be, how much cost for the second unit if you can indeed add one. I'm sure overall the system is slick.

rumor is you can't have 2 HR34's on an account (yet the install guide for the C31 says if you have multiple HMC's)

$199 for a HD DVR (2 tuner) last I checked

I currently only pay $8 for all of that, and that is new to me. It started at my 1-year, which was this cycle. The day the make me pay $3/month to watch a show in the bedroom is the day I send back that receiver.

Does anyone know how the AM21 is going to behave with the Genie? Can you get a "normal" HR34 after all this Genie stuff starts at a discount price?

The HR34 is the same as the Genie...just a funny name
I have a AM21 with my "Genie" (HR34) and it works fine

They rolled all those features (HD, DVR, WHDVR) into one fee instead of separated out

still need a genie mini (or c31) since the mini accesses those features remotely through the 34. The 25 would be independent. can not access dvr controls (aside the record trick) or on demand

That sucks. I wonder if a software update could provide those features.

i still havent seen no start over like they are talking about, its not like twc start over, because when you change the channel on dtv there is nothing that says about starting the program over from the beginning.

Actually it only works if you switch to a channel that is already recording or if you are using Double play and you switch to the other tuner. I've seen it a couple of times.

Well I do have a HR24 as well for a total of 7 recording tuners on the system. It's nice to pay the same price for the second DVR as you would even the same as a dumb client like the C31.

Does this mean a H25 will now access On demand and pause live TV through the Genie? Or is a C31 box required?

you'd have to hit record then you could. But since it has its own tuner (the H25) it doesnt affect anything from the HR34
The C31 uses a tuner from the HR34
