i just purchased a Directv H10 on ebay. do i need to sub the system to used the OTR (off air) HD capebility? it came with a directv smart card. please let me know.

No, but you will need the proper antenna for your area. Go to www.antennaweb.org and enter your zip (with +4 if you know it) and that will tell you what range antenna you need.
