what is the need for an swm 30?

I was in that same meeting where we learned about the SWM30. It's designed primarily for lodging and institutional use. For hotels that use H25s, you can run 26 of them off one SWM. (The H25 can only address 13 SWM channels so the other 2 cannot be used.)

There was also this neat little rack shown that could hold 6 SWM30s and only require 3 power supplies, this would give you the ability to service 156 guest rooms from one closet. If the runs get long, there is also a high power version of the SWM30 that will give you 25dB more power on the line.

For residential use, the primary (and as far as I can see only) reason to use a SWM30 instead of a 4K LNB is if you need to use the WorldDIRECT dish as well as the 4K dish.
