DIRECTV unlikely to keep NFL Sunday Ticket

Except, D* isn't dying today, they will be around for probably another 7-10 years and working fine.
There is no way, it will be unprofitable well before then, they have 13.9 million subscribers which includes Uverse and Stream subscribers in that total, there are rumored to be 2-3 million Uverse subs that just will not leave and 1.5 million DirecTV Stream subs, that means the Satellite Service is under 10 million.

They are losing a estimated 400,000 a quarter, even if that number did not go up ( and it will, especially when ST leaves), that is still 1.6 million leaving every year, so after, say 5 years, that is 8 million gone, they will be unprofitable well before then.

How come it's taking the NFL so long to get a deal?.. should be a no brainer
Is it really taking "so long"? Just because people in this thread are obsessed with the topic, making time flow slower for them, this is for 2023... which is one season away. NFL is under no obligation to make a decision within a time flow that works best for those posting here and in dire need for finality.

The NFL will go with what works for the NFL most, which means whatever option provides them with more money (as a reminder the NFL is a non-profit *spit-take*). The energy people are putting into this thread are taking this bidding way too personally or seriously, though if they are rural without broadband, I do sympathize with it going to streaming.

And they are just going to flip the switch and shut every one off, right ?

That's not true ...
If it was they would have opened it up to everyone, if it was all about money ... of course its about money, but its also about 1 company having it as well.

The fact that more than likely, bars and restaurants can't get it this year with streaming is the reason D* is still involved.

If you read that article about Amazon and DirecTV, it was noted that the deal was needed because Bars and Restaurants were not ready, nothing about Amazon not being able to handle the Business‘ Subscribers.

Sorry, you just cannot overcome the math and yes, if it has become unprofitable with no hope of turning things around. they will shut it down.

They have about 2 years ( a loss of at least 3.2 million subs) to either sell or merge because the losses will increase, by year 3 ( a loss now up to at least 4.6 million subs, about half of the Satellite’s Service customers )someone will be able to pick it up cheap and then by year 4 ( a loss of 6.2 million subs) it will be too late to turn things around.

Give me your reasons, what will prevent DirecTV from losing 1.6 million and up per year, what can they do to attract customers to offset the losses.

Then WHY would that do it ?

You think D* being included for Bars is being done out of the KINDNESS of their heart ?

More like getting paid, but Amazon would rather kept it all for themselves instead of splitting it with DirecTV.

Once 5g is reasonably deployed..probably called 6g by then...everything will be wireless to the customers router...allowing on demand internet connections...that way bars and such could just use internet when they needed it and have it disabled otherwise

You don't know, maybe some Rich person decides to buy it and make Sats and new Boxes and at that point there nothing wrong with it and will have turned the corner and make money ....

The company is going down hill because no one is sustaining it, or quit making improvements, THATS why they are losing subs.

We all knew that ATT would be the end of them, however, had they went out to IMPROVE them, they would still be a strong company ....

- Projecting DBS subscriber losses into the future is a fool’s errand. The market, more or less, was cable or DBS. Then came a third option and, more or less EVERYBODY who can be satisfied with just streaming has just streaming. They are not the “early adopters” of some soon to be universal trend. They are, rather, the only adopters. Everybody else is fine with linear TV. Thanks.

- Understand that Canada, with 1/10th the potential customers, has 2 robust DBS companies making profits. DBS is also big in countries where most people make about a dime for every 10 bucks you do. But somehow it heading over a cliff in the USA?

- If you buy the idea (I do not) that DBS has “launched its last satellite” and understand that they have ten of thousands of boxes, dishes, etc on hand, exactly when does that “unprofitability” kick in? They buy TV channels for $X and sell it for $X + profit. Their only unspent cost is a few kw of electricity and some third world CSRs.

- It was announced that this was to be announced at the previous Super Bowl, it rather seems that either the NFL is looking for the last cent, or A or A are getting cold feet.

- On the commercial side, DirecTV is going to be a (the?) reseller. The service MUST be predicated, and, leaving out the massive internet issues, there really is nothing much either has that a business would want.

The problem with that is it takes 3-4 years to design/plan/launch a new Satellite, if that was to happen, it needs to be now and/or the immediate future, especially since it can take about a year for the Feds to approve the deal.

Also, it looks like the merger talks with Dish are going nowhere, TPG started talking with Dish in January because they wanted to make their investment back, nothing since, not even rumors, my guess is Charlie Ergen is going to wait it out so he can pick up DirecTV cheaply.

I knew they were done for and no chance to turn things around when John Donovan, then CEO of AT&T Communications, told analysts in a presentation on November 29, 2018 “We’ve launched our last satellite”.

Might as well hang a banner saying to the public Going out of Business, do not know how they expected Customers to come to DirecTV after that.
