Even if regional phone operators are generating good subscriber numbers for DirecTV, those with the satellite TV giant said they are watching closely what the companies are doing with their fiber to the home (or curb) plans.

DirecTV executives said they are having "deep discussions" with phone companies concerning future plans, and whether the companies would become competitors down the road. Phone companies such as SBC Communications and Verizon are planning to roll out to customers fiber services that will deliver video, Internet and phone.

However, DirecTV executives also said phone company partners continue to add a significant number of customers for the satellite TV giant. Through Sept. 30, more than 90,000 BellSouth customers have added DirecTV to their communications services packages. DirecTV also works with Verizon on bundling satellite TV service with other communications services and will launch a similar effort with Qwest next year.
