Discontinuation of Chiller: January 1, 2018 A few months ago, NCTC negotiated an amendment with NBCU (NBCUniversal) that allowed Members the right to discontinue distribution of Chiller if they launched the Olympic Channel in its place. A significant number of Members representing over 2 million subscribers took advantage of the opportunity and discontinued carriage of Chiller. At the time the amendment was completed, NCTC Members, in the aggregate, made up almost 40% of all of NBCU’s total Chiller subscribers. Certain large operators had discontinued distribution of Chiller earlier in the year. NBCU had not made any official decision as to whether Chiller would be completely terminated or not but it was anticipated that if a large number of Members discontinued the service, that would speed up NBCU’s decision as to the future of the service. Given the loss of subscribers, NBCU has now officially determined that they will cease distribution of Chiller effective January 1, 2018.
