Mankato, MN
Well this is interesting....
We have Directv Stream here at the apartment compounds with Entertainment package paid by landlord/company and 2 boxes. Anywho there are 2 boxes in the exercise area on the "landlord's" account. Here is something interesting.

one box (top pic) has the Mankato, MN locals which is right (ABC & PBS from Mpls/St Paul and CBS, NBC and FOX from Mankato as we have no ABC or PBS in the market). But the other box has LA locals??? That recently changed. Use to be Mankato locals
Yes they work (and the time shows Central Time Zone). I tried the channels and they work.

Its the same type of account we have (Entertainment and the "high buck" movie channels HBO, Cinemax and Showtime) Not really a question.....more of a "well that is interesting". Hmmm maybe I'll exercise at more specific times to watch programs on the LA stations ;):biggrin (yes I do use the exercise room when the weather is blech to get some walking in)

That IS interesting to say the least. You just gotta love the quirks this business presents on a daily basis.

Is it possible that the boxes are on 2 different WiFi &/or internet providers - & that one of them is might be getting incorrect locals because of an IP-address issue on that same provider?

They determine your location by where the ISP routes your internet traffic, and it isn't always near your physical location.

you'll need to talk with your LL. while your in IL i am almost certain the nearest node to your apt is not in LA :biggrin

Always hated the whole scheme...It's satellite, let me see everything. Why does a commercial advertiser paid ch. with free spectrum need to charge or prohibit me to see

Is "location services" enabled on both boxes?

nope. They are both hardwired to the modem next door (the community room). We get internet included in rent (each unit has a modem) so its all the same company (Consolidated but the internet if called Fidium)

I'm in Minnesota, not Illinois. Both boxes are hardwired to the modem. All units in the compound (somewhere around 300 units) have Directv stream and internet included in rent. Hey can't argue with 1G internet :D (Fidium is the provider...part of Consolidated)

Well it must have fixed itself. Went down to the exercise room and now both units are showing Mankato locals. Weird because last Saturday it was the same way....LA locals on one unit, Mankato on the other.

It doesn't apply to Mr. Tony's case, but some of the cellular and satellite based ISPs including Starlink don't assign IP addresses by region and instead resolve to random datacenters. i.e. Some of the Starlink users on this forum have had IP addresses that resolve to one of Comcast's enterprise facilities in Portland even though they were actually in Texas. Cellular IP addresses don't change as you travel as long as your mobile data connection remains active, so it's rare for their IP addresses to resolve to your actual location.

There's also a shortage of IPV4 addresses, so address blocks frequently get reassigned faster than the geoip providers like Maxmind and others can keep up. i.e. About 3 years ago my ISP PenTeleData repurposed a range that used to be for one of their backbone connections at Equinix's Chicago datacenter, so initially the geoip database used by DIRECTV's online grids was defaulting to Chicago's locals instead of Scranton's. And if you have IPV6, depending on how your ISP assigns those addresses, it can be the wild west with no grouping by region.

A lot of public/guest wifi like hotels, airports, gyms and restaraunt chains go through a forced proxy so they can redirect you to their custom portal, agree to their TOS, give you the option to pay for faster speeds, and limit how long each session lasts. So even though the local ISP is supplying the physical connection, to the internet you resolve to whatever datacenter they contracted with.
