Dish after lightning strike

Network phone interface box on side of house got zapped. Electrons went everywhere tripping breakers and knocking out cable modem among other things. Hopper3 works but Joeys say no signal at HDMI input on tv. Hopper shows Joey connected and with strong signal. Have changed and reset about everything; still no signal. Suggestions?

More than likely the Lightning blew out your HDMI board on your tv.. try a different HDMI port on the tv. take Joey to another tv and see if you get HDMI out put from Joey.. Also get a different device like a DVD player etc and connect to the tv with no signal to see if you get anything. It's a game of trial and error till you figure out exactly what device is the culprit. Good Luck!

Just phone. Dish goes from dish to switch to hopper then to joeys. Hopper says switch fine and joey gets good signal.

Actually connected it to another tv;same result.2 out of 4 joeys wont power up at all;other 2 say no signal.TV on hopper connected via hdmi and its fine.

So all 4 tvs on joeys got hdmi boards blown out but tv connected to hopper didnt?

Still, I suspect the Hopper. And don't be surprised if a few things are toast.

Did you change the HDMI Cables or test the HDMI inputs by moving to another input or with other devices??

I had a Panasonic HDTV lose its HDMI ports due to a nearby lightning strike. The component video inputs still worked, so I got an HDMI to component converter. I still use it as our second TV and still get an HD picture. The Joey connects to the converter.

I lost a really nice JBL subwoofer to a strike several years ago. Nothing else (Hopper included) on same circuit was hurt.

I learned this the hard way using a cheap older surge protector, when we had an ice storm and my Prime Star satellite receiver started smoking, when the lights kept browning out and then coming back on in quick succession. Smoke came out of the sat receiver and we ended up with DISH afterwards in January of 1997.

I have an APC Line Conditioner, surge suppressor and UPS on both downstairs and upstairs HTs. Helps a lot with brownouts.

In fact I have UPS/surge catchers on all my important ($) stuff.

Most of what you'll read will tell you yes. But they're talking about cheapie surge protectors. I forget the year limit - 7?

But for GOOD ones, say, $100 & up, I wouldn't worry about it. Ah suspicions yer Monster met that goal.

However, if you see burn marks, any sign of scorching, or physical wear- TOSS IT! Cut off the power cable first. Then unplug it!

PS- I'd say surge suppressors under $50 are short lived, and not worth the money.

I have no idea why the CSR's started that but nothing I know confirms that to be true

I think it's a step CSR tries for troubleshooting certain issues.

SOME surge suppressors from LONG AGO were what I'd call defective. It was possible for them to corrupt the power (IIRC). Possibly messing with STBs.

I doubt such was ever proven. I think they are just trying to minimize any possible other factor. Or drag it out until you give up.

Mine is plugged into a nice APC unit that line conditions (over and under current protection), and acts as a UPS.
