Can someone tell me what is the deference with the dish channel on my vip 612 it show channel in the 9000 range 8000 range 6000 range, i have my fav list for my locals in St louis on 2 thur 30 then i go to the 100's 200's 300's 400's and 500's on Dish.com it had me put in my zip code 62002 and it show the 6000's range does it matter what i use, will the hd pictures be better or what. My Dish has one lnb then a 2 lnb and one lnb i am on sats 110 118 119 129 does that matter. can some tell me. I get great pictures on the channel i have now but if it would make a deference than i will switch. I don't know why Dish has so many channel anyway.:)

read about mapdown. Many HD channels and some others are in these high number ranges. The same channels can be mapped down to other areas so they show up in the lower ranges, often right next to SD versions of the same channel or grouped with similar channels. The maped down channel is a virtual repeat (not a duplicate satellite signal), you can set to record either one. They are the same actual signal. You can turn off mapdown, but it is on by default.

Dish just remaps the channels to different channel numbers for some unknown reason. There is only one channel for each network. The remapping does not impact quality. Choose any of the channels that best suit your needs and ignore the rest.

Channels in the 8000 range are sd, the 6000 are HD, both can be mapped down to the same location. The sd channels will appear first in the list, the HD will have "HD" next to the channel number in the guide.

They used to do that when they started doing LIL channels cause some of the old receivers could not be programmed to map down so they were in both places. I don't see why they need to do it now with HD MPeg4, but they do.

I use the LOCKs feature and lock out all duplicate channels and keep only the hd versions at their lower channel numbers. I have HD as the priority under the DISH locals and I get no duplicated local sd channels in the lower channel numbers. I wish that DISH would follow DIRECTV and when their is an hd version of a channel , they automatically delete the sd version and all new hd channels are at their lower channel numbers. It would prevent having to use locks all the time to clean up the channel guides.
