There's 4 sports teams in Detroit (well technically 3 in the city of Detroit itself since the Pistons play in Auburn Hills). He also owns the Fox Theater. He should buy the Lions and turn them into champions. Worked for the Red Wings.

And his wife owns a Motor City Casino as well.

If he buys the Pistons he will also bid for The Palace and DTE Energy and so anytime you go to a concert, chances are you're cash is going into one of the Illitch's pockets.

According to The Ticket's 2-6 show, he's more interested in the stadiums and venues, then the actual team.

I don't like that very much.

This looks like expanding his holdings from "sports" to "entertainment". I don't believe for a moment Illitch wants to see the Pistons go, so he may be interested in getting the team to keep it in Detroit.

As an important reminder, take a look at the amount of time it took for his teams to become contenders. He bought the Red Wings in '82 and it took about 10 years before it became synonymous with "Hockeytown". He bought the Tigers in '92 and only recently have they been winning. I'd sincerely believe it would take some time to make the Pistons into a winner.

But then again, imagine what happens if all those venues can bring in other entertainment dollars? That would cement funding for the leverage he would need in order to buy out Palace Sports and Entertainment. It's corporate restructuring at its finest.

most of them are owned by Fox itself including FS Detroit

I thought it was that way, but wasn't sure.

That said, he'd either have to start his own network. Remember the Sports network in town use to be called "PASS" for the longest time (I have no idea if Mr. I owned it or not).

Or he would have to buy the Sports division of FOX :D

PASS was owned by Tom Monaghan (former owner of Tigers and founder of Dominos Pizza) at first, then by Post Newsweek Stations (owner of WDIV NBC 4 in Detroit) and was affiliated with Prime Network (precursor to Fox Sports Net). FSD has always been owned by Fox (News Corp.)

Thanks for the Info :up

You remember PASS ?

so who's going to take out the Ford Family so Illitch can buy the Lions ? ;)

Thats about the only way to get them to leave .... hate to say it, but the Ford's just don't get it after all these years ... they need to SELL.
Of course they may not get as much as they gave up originally ..... wait, now that the Millen Error is over, they may be alright.

Yeah but barely watched it, I didn't watch many sports much as a kid. I remember it was a premium channel til 92. My relatives had a black box descrambler (remember those?) and got it free!

Heck I forgot that it was around that long. I was thinking more like '80's when it went away.

That said, I'm very glad the local teams are on FSN D, except the Lions, it's amazing that you never hear about them on there, at all.

I would rather see the Pistons move onto another network, I know some are on Channel 20.
They are always screwing up the works when the Wings are on.

Wings in the playoffs, Pistons are playing last place ball, but we MISS the Wings and have to deal with the Pistons.

Thank God for FSN D + (Now in HD )

All Pistons games are on FS D now. So are all Red Wings and Tigers.

FSN Detroit Nets Pro Sports Three-Pointer - 2008-03-19 08:38:00 | Multichannel News

WWJ-TV and a group of affiliates in MI has local rights to the Lions. FSD has a section on their website for them.

now if maybe WWJ would upgrade their public access cameras to something better the games might actually make it on NFL Net ;)
Since they were SD only and NFL Net says all games in HD they had to use the other teams broadcast ;)

I see they stole some HD cameras...hope they know how to use them :p
(and before anyone says it I have access to Detroit stations via Shaw Direct so I knolw how "good" it looked last year)

How do you have Shaw Direct in MN? I thought they only served Canada.

The address has to be in Canada (mine is in Ft Frances to be exact) but I can bring it where ever I want. Lots of Canucks bring it to Florida and Arizona in the winter.
The only rule for Bell and Shaw is the address on file has to be Canadian which it is :)

They move their whole system, i.e. take down the dish and re-install it? Wouldn't it be easier to get NHL CI?

nah they use a 2nd dish and just move the receiver
Most snowbirds dont have the necessary US info to get D* or E* so they keep the Canadian system activated. Heck I had to call them a couple weeks ago and the 1st message after the English 1 Francois 2 was "If you moved your receiver back to your summer residence and are not getting the necessary programming press 3 and follow the prompts" :)

I personally think its an excuse for justification to build another arena in downtown Detroit.

Right now there is no incentive for the city to get off their butt and do what needs to be done to clear the way for a new arena for the Red Wings. You throw the Pistons in the mix and bring them to Detroit again, and all of a sudden the squeeky wheel gets moving.

Lets just hope the rumors are true and they build this facility accross from the Fox Theatre, and NOT at Michigan and Trumbull.

I've heard from way back that Mr. I was looking at the other side of the Fox Theatre / Hockeytown (behind Hockwetown Cafe) I know theree's parking there now, but a few blocks farther I'm guessing is older buildings not being used ?

I hope he passes on the Pistons and someone else buys them and keeps them in Detroit.

He's having a hard enough time giving enough money out to get the Tigers going, don't need to divy up MORE money.
Eat more PIZZA's !
