70 isn't old, but I thought he was much younger. Rookie season, takes the LA Kings to the Stanley Cup Finals in one of the oddest playoff years that I can recall. The Kings would lose in the final to the Canadiens despite going up 1-0 in the opener. Melrose's Kings were winning Game 2 late and then the infamous Marty McSorley curved stick penalty. This led to a late power play, the Habs tie up the game, win in OT, for like the 400th time that playoff year, and go on to win the Cup, largely on the back of Patrick Roy.
Melrose never matched that again (though his first regular season wasn't that good... the Habs we 3rd in the Adams but were 48-30-6, where as the Kings were 3rd in the Smythe (I'm not old, stop looking at me like that) 39-35-10) and his coaching career came to a halt a few seasons later. Did TV after that, for quite a while. Had an abbreviated player career, playing in both the WHA and NHL.
