Hey guys I'm on the verge of switching from Direct to Dish for that kick ass Hopper. I was checking out the premium channels compared to Direct. It looks like Direct has more Max channels and more Showtime channels. It also looks like they have more of them in HD too. I could care less but my wife loves having all the movie channels.

So my question is... does Dish plan on getting more premiums and in HD? For years we didn't get Max because Direct only gave you two channels. After a while that changed. I'm just wondering if Dish was in the process of being on par with Direct.

One more question. Can I customize my guide on the Hopper for favorite channels and sports? Thanks again for all the help. I do appreciate it!

The first question I do not think anyone knows but dish. Yes you can create up favorite list on the VIP receivers and I suppose that on hopper is no different.

At one time, Dish was ahead of DirecTV in premiums especially with HBO and Cinemax. DirecTV used to only have 3 Cinemax channels. You can notice the ones DirecTV added last since they are HD only. For more information on premiums: http://www.dish.com/entertainment/channels/

Your wife may like some of the premiums that are not currently on DirecTV last time I checked like Epix 1 HD, Epix 2 HD, Epix 3 HD, Epix Drive-In, IndiePlex HD, RetroPlex HD, MoviePlex, etc. Some of these require Blockbuster @ Home. Some people get the $10/month add-on just for the extra channels. However, there is a one disc at a time service included for movies or/and games. An extra disc can be added for $5/month. The only issue usually is the wait list for some discs. For more information on Blockbuster @ Home: http://www.dish.com/entertainment/blockbuster/

HBO Go, Max Go, Epix (online), Dish Online (Starz, Encore, MoviePlex, etc.) may also come in handy. For more information on Dish Online:

Here is a link to channel lineup cards: http://www.mydish.com/programmingguides/

There are some Hopper manuals here if you want an idea about it and it's features: http://www.mydish.com/support/manuals

Here is a link for a pricing calculator if you want to estimate your monthly total: http://commercial.dishnetwork.com/calculator/default.aspx

As a new customer, you most likely will qualify for 3 months free of HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Showtime, and Blockbuster @ Home. You will also most likely qualify for 4 months free of the Protection Plan.

On a side note I switched from DirecTV 3 months ago, and I now have 2 Hoppers/3 Joeys and I am extremely satisfied with it over the DVR from DirecTV, it is much faster and it actually responds to the remote.

I have a friend who has the Hopper and it's an amazing piece of equipment. I have a HR24 with Direct that's ok now my HR23 is so damn so. I am not happy with it at all. I'm sure I will be happy with a 2 Hopper system.

Dish definitely lags behind DirecTV when it comes to Showtime. I've been a Showtime subscriber for a couple years now (but don't subscribe to HBO, Cinemax or Starz). Unlike DirecTV subscribers, we don't have access to Showtime OnDemand, Showtime Anytime (web-based access), or HD feeds of 5 different Showtime/The Movie Channel channels. It's the only really big gripe I have with Dish compared to DirecTV.

We currently have showtime but after episodes finishes this weekend we will be dropping it and picking up HBO I think, we really don't watch anything else on showtime. Anyone have recommendations for what I may be missing on showtime

I also do like that when I had HBO the vod selection is great for old series

I am thinking this is not breaking news, but when i called to add HBO I received it for half off (as others have at well) and also was offered half off Cinemax, which I declined. Looks like there is a sale on premiums right now ;)

I would say thanks for the info but I get the new subscriber deal. After my free 3 months can I get that deal? I'm not trying to get over on Dish or anything. I'm just wondering. :p

Dish does offer free premium offers from time to time. You may just have to ask whether online, by phone, e-mail, DIRT, etc. At one time, Dish used to have it posted in the fine print at the bottom of the site for existing customers. Dish may even do free previews of premiums for all customers for about a weekend which was seen recently with Cinemax.

I personally have been with Dish since 2001. Very happy. Called in a month or 2 ago about a billing question and got all the premiums for half price for 6 mos as well as BB@home at half price for 6 mos. Called today as I didn't get my club dish credit for refering my mother and they had to fix that. They offered 10 dollars off my bill for a year as well as free Playboy for 3 mos. Of course I took it! Very satisfied. Went through the retention dept.
