Dish remote question

Great Forum! Way too much to search so I may be asking an old question. My parents have a Dish HD receiver with DVR, I want to say it's a 612. Anyways can we get a newer style remote to work with this box? I got them a Vizio soundbar and we could not get it to program using numbers entry method. This is a part time residence so I can't say which remote model it is other than its silver. Lol. Or are we missing something here. My Slingbox system is easy to program for the obvious reasons. We are going up there in a few weeks and would love to get this thing working and then they'd be happy!

Thanks

Have you ever thought of looking into a programmable universal remote for them, like a Harmony? I picked up the lesser expensive Harmony 650 for both of my parents TV locations, and its some of the best money I've ever spent. Makes it soo much easier for them to use, since it takes care of firing up all the different equipment, setting proper inputs, etc. automatically. (Not to mention my sanity supporting them, technology-wise. ;))

If you do not currently have a 21.x remote or 20.x remote, then you can go to Best Buy or Walmart and get one.

No they don't have a learning remote. I will go ahead and get the newer style remote. I can't recall if there system has a remote 1 and 2. Would it matter either way? Wish I could go there and see but it's 5 hours away.

If you want to use the UHF feature of the remote, on a 612, you need the 21.1 with either the blank black chip or the number two in place.

Thanks for the info guys! Came to the right place. So why would getting a remote with a 2 be better if its replacing the main receiver box remote? Sorry I'm slightly ignorant! :)

I've had my 922 forever. So never had to do anything. Also is there a link out there to program the remote for which items power on when you hit the power button and to tell it the AUX button will control volume? Don't recall if their receiver has the nice remote control manager screen.

Lastly my dad never liked universal remotes. He had too many issues in the past. He admits it was his fault but I don't wanna see his face if I got him one of those!! :eeek

Thanks again everyone

Don't let the "2" throw you. The 21.1 remote is select-able between IR (TV 1) and UHF (TV 2) The tab is reversible. If there is no chance they would want to use UHF, just get the 21.0
