I am going to take the plunge and switch from cable to dish. I am looking into a local retailer to install my dish. I have heard that a local retailer may make you sign a contract because of charge backs. Does anyone know how long the chargeback period is? Also, is Dish Family the minimum contract package?

It think you are refering to the new customer commitment (not much to do with Credit Card chargebacks). Generally you need to sign a 24 month commitment. Dish usually has to invest a lot into a new customer: dish, LNB, wiring, recievers, etc, not to mention labor for installation. They just want to make sure that that investment was wothwhile.

I belive there is a little advertized "Welcome Pack" that is even a lower tier than Dish Family.

Consider taking the plunge via DishStore. Stellar reputation and sponsor of this site.

The retailer chargeback is prorated over 12 months. The Family pack is the lowest cost, domestic programming package asking the customer to initial a contract. Top100 package or higher, usually has other perks for both the customer and dealer. Some persons value the services provided by a local dealer. Sales, installation and after sale service can be helpful. Make your own decision regarding local vs. direct to E*.:)
