DISH Sues Networks

I See the networks just adding a scroll bar on all their shows with ticker tape graphics and minature people hopping around on the screen to advertise their commercials. Also they could just start adding product placements in the shows themselves with the actors talking about the products as part of the show. Whole episodes could be devoted to a certain line of products as their theme . They used to do this in the 50s and I can see it making a return if they want to counter the auto hop feature.

Adding product placement in the shows, that right there is where it's going to happen because if the networks would do that that would stop my FFWing through commercials because i would not know where they start or end as they do now.

That may benefit the actors also maybe they will be able to get their program salary plus the commercial fee.;)

I thought some shows already did or do product placement. In addition, there are already enough annoying moving advertisements or banners during shows. We was on the other day on the TV, and I noticed that We placed varying "advertisements" of Kendra on Top promos taking up half the screen on top as well as taking up half the screen on the entire left side of the screen during the show that was on.

I don't remember seeing it on the local networks shows, but if they already do that, that would be great subliminal advertising because I have not even noticed it.

I read that NBC's Passions (although it is no longer airing) did some product placement.

Watched a recorded tv show last night from Nbc: Harry's Law. During the show I had graphics pop up for the latest Snow White Movie and when it starts. Then graphics for the new show starting on NBC some time this week. I predict before long our tv screens will look like our computer screens full of pop ups , graphics and ticker tapes running along the screen. Especially if the Auto hop feature stays in effect and gets copied by other companies.

As for product placement episodes, I can see a new" Whitney" episode where she accidentally douches with Draino, instead of Massengel Feminine products( because her boyfriend puts the draino in the wrong box , because he doesn't pay attention) and ends up having to use a rental car from Hertz to get to the Hospital, but gets in a wreck with a student driver from a local driving school, then they have to pull out their insurance cards and compare who has the better coverage. Then Whitney gets sick in the car and her boyfriend has to use Bounty -the quicker picker upper- to clean up the mess in the car and her boyfriend has to give Whitney Pepto bismal for her stomach ache. Then she could advertise what medical doctor's health insurance she wants to use when she gets to the hospital and Hilarity ensues...:p

Next week the whole episode will be devoted to her boyfriend and his Viagra addiction. Yeah the future looks full of more commercial advertising than ever. ;)

Product placement like that would also make it cheaper to produce DVDs/Blurays for purchase. Yet, fewer will purchase such artistic wasteland crap.

They poked fun at that in The Simpsons Movie. Heck on my back from a trip Canada this week I was listening to a few radio stations who were placing their ID spots in the songs. I first thought it was an error, but happened regularly when a song went over the top of the hour. Got to love FCC regulations.

Charlie or anyone else for that matter will be at the ready with pop up blocker or ad blocker.:D

Now that you mention it, I have often thought they had it backwards. The Big 4 should be paying Dish to retransmit their programming. :D
I'm curious...

Networks (whether Big 4 or not) have to pay to get shows produced & put on the air.
Big 4 Networks then charge their local affiliates to carry their signal.
Local affiliates get money from either advertising rates and/or retrans agreements with cable/satellite providers.

So if local affiliates don't get their money, they can't pay the network.
If networks can't get their money, they can't get shows.
If they can't get shows, there's nothing to watch.

I'm sure some of you would say "fine, they're not providing anything I want to watch anyway." No problem. But then why are you complaining about it? If it goes away, you wouldn't know because you're not watching.

Let's also remember, most affiliates are NOT owned by the Network. Does a network have the power to tell an affiliate "don't agree to a retrans with Dish"?

That ignores a whole bunch of "stuff." Main point, the affiliates are supposed to be giving a free signal. For that, they are protected, no one else can give us a signal even as an alternative let alone in place of the local affiliate. As it stands now, even if you are in a "White Zone" - an area where you can't get the local affiliate, Dish and Direct are no longer allowed to give you a distant channel, that's how protected they are. Since the only way you can get that signal when not available by antenna is by satellite (that's what we are talking about, forget Cable for this) the affiliate is dependent on the satellite provider. Yet, with all that, they want to hold Dish or Direct hostage and start to charge more and more. If they are going to charge, they have to lose their monopoly. The days of the provider having to deal with hundreds of affiliates all with the same programming (essentially) need to be over.

The more retrans agreements they get, the more potential viewers they are exposed to, thus higher potential advertising rates. The affiliates benefit in potential higher ad revenue from having their signal retransmitted via cable and satellite, yet they also get to charge for that benefit as well? I'm curious too.
