DISH Terminates all Distributers

Advertisements
I talked to two different folks yesterday who said they were blindsided by this and were not expecting it.
The only reason I speculated that they knew was the extremely LOW inventory levels....I mean so low that they were having trouble filling my order.

Edit: Came back to add that the employees might now have known but the upper management probably knew.

Here is the letter that went with the 4 page document above. People are sending me these things.

Just out of curiosity

What was the advantage of a retailer buy product from a distributor instead of directly from dish?
Good question. In my case the choice was very easy to go with Dow vs Dish direct. I became a dealer in 1999. Dow had a location up in Albany, GA and had a delivery truck that ran every week. They charged something like $25 flat rate. I saved thousands of dollars...probably tens of thousands, because back in the day, I was doing 30-50 installs per month. Then you add in DishNet internet and the savings on shipping REALLY added up fast. If some type of emergency happened I could drive up there in under 2 hrs.
Even after they closed that location due to shrinking dealer orders, it was still better going with Dow because they shipped from either Duluth, GA or Tampa, FL, either one got the order here the next day.

Years ago, I was sitting in a Carl Jrs in Duluth, MN having a coffee and morning biscuit.
The driver of an 18 wheeler walked in and asked me if I could help him find an address.
He was pulling a load of dog food from Dallas, TX.

He was looking for a location on Peach Street as I recall.

Told him there is no Peach Street.
He shows me his papers and it has Duluth, GA as the city.

These things are like a death in the family.
Long term friendships and contacts are broken over night.

And, there is no one to blame, it has to happen to survive.
Having been through some of those "events", a couple years later I would find myself thinking which side of the coin really lost with the loser ending up as the winner as time passed by.

Yep....happens way too much. Back when I was a Viasat dealer I ordered through DSI. Jeff was great to work with, if he didn't have an answer right then, he WOULD have one shortly. Viasat ended their relationship with DSI and we had to order from P10 which, for me anyway, was a disaster. They KNEW we had no choice so they really didn't care if we liked dealing with them or not.
I started out in 1984 with a Radio Shack franchise. You really got to know everyone at the annual meetings. Even formed very good relationships with my non-Radio Shack distributors. Sold it in 1997 and even by then, things had changed a LOT.

So a satellite equipment distributor is a "point of failure"?

Sat distributors are American entrepreneurial icons, just as are/were the sat dealers (not "retailers") they served, who in turn served every station of Americans. Charlie himself was one of them (us), but evidently just a bit more entrepreneurial as well as lacking in scruples, which unironically seems to go together. I mark so many memories by my satellite service; like driving to Skywalker's to cram gear into my T-bird as well as that install I did on election eve 2000, when after I got the signal tuned it said Gore had won Fla....

Satellite dealers, servicers and the numerous independent distributors who served all- thank you. Though likely your memories are all of the thanks you'll ever need.
Depends since obviously the ones who were involved would think differently. Point of failure is not thought the same way as sad. It's almost like a internet connection failed, there can be 23+ things that can fail between the origination and the destination. If there are less, it would be better. As a vendor rather than calling it a dealer or retailer, would you rather have a direct connection to DISH when there is a problem or would you rather have to go through multiple layers before you can even reach DISH. Even for equipment, DISH's costs would always be lower than the distributor and distributor's cost would be less than the dealer/retailer since each level will buy it and then sell it with some profit margin added above their costs. So things look different depending upon what position one is looking at it. You are looking at it as the last vendor who deals with the customer while I am looking at it neutrally even though I am the end user which normally, no one cares about how many levels it took to get to them other than the more layers involved, the costs will be higher as a end result so for all we know, DISH obviously will need to be more competitive to compete with the competition and one way to do that obviously is to lower their costs.

A distinction without a difference.
Depends how you look as it would obviously cost more as in less profit margin for each additional layer that is involved from DISH's point of view so their profit margin is lower. Juan did ask a good question which you answered. I guess it also depends on if you have a good distributor or a bad one just like one can have a bad servicer or a good one as it's a YMMV situation. One thought could be at the same time, the equipment from the distributor might not be as recent as the one direct from DISH so using an example, the distributor might only have the batch that was made like 3 weeks ago while DISH might have the one that was made a few days ago. One of my friends runs a high-end audio store as a dealer and his markup had always been 40% but anyone who has bought from him that paid full MSRP the first time would get 20% off MSRP on all future purchases.

Man oh man....was HE lost. I seriously doubt there is a Peach St. in the entire state of MN.
There is as I just looked it up. Granada, Minnesota has one. There is no Peach Street in Duluth, Georgia either as the closest would be Peachtree which exists in several types of streets.

Hopefully he learned to be more careful in the future as it was probably a very expensive mistake in both time and money costs just like there is a difference between Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine and at least in the current age, look up the complete street address with the city, state and zipcode to make sure it exists.

That's what I commented earlier in thread. Apparently not completely until now.

I did some business with DSI as well. Really, all told, maybe at least a half dozen between C-band & DiSH. Main advantage to a dist. was that they were much more likely to be conveniently close compared to going for one of the echo-direct outlets (but I was still never lucky enough to have free delivery). Also then you have at least one party between you and Charlie to go to bat for you. Plus of course back in C-band echo was merely one of maybe 30 or 40 distribution options (though most were regional). Then with DTV & Dish the # of dists started to shrink and then be cut back as the like of echo got more and more emboldened both to sell direct to subscriber as well as chisel their dist's more.

The only time I had trouble with getting gear was actually right at the outset of DiSH- all of the first systems seemed to have been allocated to the largest dealers. Never did do DTV- my application was actually rejected, even though I was a C-band sat dealer! So I just stuck with DiSH.

Oh, also- Amir's still there?!? Good lord

Ah....so you're one of those "bees don't bite they sting" people. I was making a comment in jest. Good NIGHT!!

A LOT of towns in the South have a street named Peach.....very few in the north do.
