Dish Vip-722, does it need service to record OTA?

No you can not,You need an active receiver to get ota chs

Sell it if you own it and get E*'s DTVPal DVR. It records 2 OTA and has a guide. I think it's $250 at dtvpal.com. I can't vouch for the performance as I don't own one.

The current concensus is that the OTA signal is better on the DTVPal dvr than on the DIsh receivers but it only provides timer based recording not name based recording.
