i was thinking maybe a reprogram of them boxes since they receive a satellite signal someway already . looking at the box in one of the pictures is says satellite receiver on it.. probably just wishful thinking on my part. ive seen hundreds of these boxes on ebay of late

Maybe good news....?

I found this at Satforums with a timestamp of 7pm tonight....
There may be some help in sight just received an email there is a remapping fix in the works so do not give up yet. The 4DTV time is not up yet.

The next person asked if it came from Skyvision/SRL but that post hasn't been answered yet.....

Someone could be blowing smoke too. In theory the 4DTV should be able to run in the HITS W5 data. But will Motorola do it? I was hoping sat talk would be on tonight and Mike Kohl would have some input.

I have a question or two, if I may... Please excuse my ignorance here.

What about sports bars, casinos, etc... that use BUD's. Are they considered commercial? Are they able to get programming?

The satellites will still continue to transmit signals, even if they M doesn't support the residential market, correct?

Should I hold off on installing my 10' dish then? I was planning on having it done next month. I was planning on using a 922?

bud

I have had a BUD for years and can say it is a good investment. It does require learning though vs pizza dishes. I have a HD FTA connected to "C" amd "KU" LNB's with the 4DTV as a dish mover. There is some free channels on the 4DTV but subscribe basic 4DTV package. It depends on how advanced you want to be. Is it worth it for me YES ! Keep finding more FREE channels. The problem with pizza dish 'dish and direct' is you are paying for free channels. Will be testing a commercial 4DTV receiver when it arrives. :D

In regards to bars, etc using c-band.... I would think that it is possible, based on response from Motorola to me a few weeks back that even though 4dtv (consumer) is scheduled to be shut down 31 December, the CSR recommended for me to get with sales about getting a commercial unit, now this guy might not have a clue, but it sounded to me like they do this all the time. So I would think that if you have a commercial business, they will sell you programming. Something to think about. I still have a sales tax id around here somewhere...

That would be great but I think for what they would charge us would make charlie look like a bargain!!!

A local bar got "caught" using a pizza system for his business and they set him up for a commercial account and that did not last long! No more pizza!! :up

Using commercial receivers to subscribe to channels: it all depends on the programming provider.
[For non-HTIS channels] Some programming providers will sell you a subscription, but expect you to have a separate receiver for each channel. You would have to do some serious convincing to get them to authorize multiple channels on a single receiver.
Some programming providers won't even talk to you unless you're a huge cable or satellite provider, as NPS found out when trying to get the Disney/ESPN channels for C-band.

Adding to the problem is there's no single point of contact for non-HTIS channels. You have to talk to each programming provider separately to get the channels you want. So yes, it's possible for bars or hotels to use commercial satellite receivers, but it can get very expense and add lots of overhead.

I don't see why it's such a big deal to have more than one provider, back in the ol analog days, I had a sub with Galaxy Programming, some with HBO Direct, a couple of adults, and not to mention TVN PPV, all these were different providers. Oh and ESPN and Disney were both there. It could be done now if they and we wanted it to happen, money talks.

If this is the same guy I've dealt with at Skyvision I wouldn't trust anything he says either.

i wouldn't be opposed to having multiple providers that get paid seperately. aside from expense....having a receiver for every channel would be a little bulky with all the equipment.

I don't know how long you have been around Satellite tv. Mike Kohl goes way back. I would trust what Mike says. I have dealt with him in the past and he is very honest and been a good help to home dish users for decades.

I don't mean to start any flame wars but he's a salesman. Need I say more? Besides, when someone tells me that the next antenna that I order from them is going to be a particular brand I expect to receive that brand. In my case, I was told that I would get a Sami branded antenna but I got a KTI. And when I complained I was made out to be the liar. I was told that Sami sells KTI and I guess that's what he meant by the next antenna being a Sami even though I understood that I was going to get a Sami name branded antenna.

And it's interesting to note that NPS was/is being flamed even though it's looking like they're right about 4DTV going "bye-bye". I realize that it's possible that the 4DTV might be saved but I'm not counting on it. But, it would be nice if I got a few more years out of the 4DTV.

I just received an e-mail from Sami stating that parts are available for my hail damaged KTI antenna but I was told that spare parts weren't available. So, I ended up spending $2000 for a new antenna that Mr. Kohl said parts weren't available. Of course, it's all my fault so I'm stuck with another $2000 antenna that I shouldn't have had to buy.

BTW, I've had a dish since about 1990 and have dealt with Skyvision in the past. But, I don't normally pay attention to individuals in the business.

My experiences with Mike Kohl and Skyvision were always positive. I'm sorry if you had an issue. I would have asked to speak with someone in charge and get it resolved.

Why wouldn't NPS have the answer ahead of time for the shutdown. It was pre planned with Charlie Ergan to exactly do what it accomplished, don't think otherwise. Charlie wants it all and will stop at nothing to get it. He bought the CEO of NPS out just like he did with Superstar, Netlink and Turnervision. The way he went about it though makes him and NPS look like the good guys. Some people can see through the smokescreen they put up and can read the writing on the wall.

Unless we can get the W5 HITS datastream set up to work with the 4D it's toast as far as normal routes go. There will be options that will work behind the scenes to be able to still use it for free channels and possibly more (who knows)
