There may or may not be an RS232 port on the back. It's always been unclear to me what the MMAP port really is. And there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of consensus about the subject either.
As far as how you would load the *.bin file... I've wondered that myself. I'm guessing with a BDM adapter connected to the 10 pin header on the main board, but I don't know. Even if the appropriate software to do this does exists, I've never even caught a whiff of a rumor about it. Probably some big Motorola secret, lol.
Cheers
Well what ever the bin file is for people are keeping it to their chest, it exist for a reason and it is s free download from TVROPRO website.
When I first saw it I thought that it would be used in the event that if the battery died and you want to restore the receiver you would be able to load this to return your unit id and receiver number. It is
amazing that a company like Motorola with their reputation would build a receiver that would be of no use if a battery died. I would have thought that a first generation receiver would have that problem as the guys would not be thinking about things like that back in the 19th century, but this is the 21st century

Any FTA box now and some manufactured before the 4DTV receiver, you can get a factory bin that can restore the receiver or even bring it back to life depending on the problem. I had to calculate the year the receiver was manufactured and now I have to purchace the battery and holder and follow a tutorial to put in the battery to save the receiver in the event that....

TVROPRO is a knowledgable fellow based on what I have read so far on this site, so I am hoping that he post the instructions on how to use the bin file on his site. From his post and the love he has for C-band and his desire to see it continue, he does not appear to be the kind of person that would leave you at the well and walk off with his bucket and rope.
It's use may be too technical without the proper tools and the ordinary member still may not be able to use it but the mystery would be gone and he may know someone with the tools to do the job.
We shall see.
