Dude hacks an iPad

hmm; seems silly. He now invalidated any support on both devices. Why not just use the wifi option and keep the Mifi in your pocket and still enjoy the benefits of the verizon connection?

I know it's nice to see how it's done, but this just seems very impractical.

This guy is pretty smart when it comes to hacking but, I have to put him into my group of geeks who have more money than brains!

Let's look at what he as accomplished and at what cost:

He has Verizon 3G network internet access on his ipad.
The cost:

He paid Apple + 129 for the ipad 3G + wifi model
He paid Verizon $50 for the mifi with a 2 year contract.
He pays Verizon $60 a month for the 5Gb service. Or, that equates to $1440 over the 2 year period.
He has given up his warranty for both devices.

Total: $1619

What he has given up:
He admits losing the high quality of the sound from the ipad due to removing the resonant tube to make room for the mifi board.
He admits losing GPS capability of the ipad. ( Not sure why that was the case but that is what he said.)

Let's assume he normally uses a Verizon smart phone with 5Gb data plan. Had he done what I did his total cost would be $20 for the smart phone app. No changes to the ipad and it uses the same account he would already have on a properly equipped ( wifi) smartphone.
That is the total cost for 2 years!

He has more money than brains!
