Hi all, I just got a good deal (i think) on a hughes tivo HD for directtv. My question is, do I have to add a service to my directtv programming in order to do dvr?

You'll have to activate that box with DirecTV, which will probably involve buying a new access card ($20) from them... and then, yes, you'll have to pay for the DVR service ($5.99/mo) to use it.

Also, you know you won't get any of the new channels with that box, right? And then eventually you won't get any HD channels...?

so I might as well go buy a new box from directv or a third-party dealor?

If you want any of the new HD channels or HD locals, then you must buy a non-Tivo box. The Tivo box will only give you the handful of HD channels that are still MPEG2.
