Echostar 5 to move to 148° West

Echostar has applied to the FCC to move Echostar 5 to 148° West commencing on January 15, 2009.

True, but not news, there are two recent threads about it.

The idea is to keep the license for the transponder frequencies that EchoStar 1 cannot service.

If it gets there with one even numbered tranponder still working, it will be enough to hold the license until a better satellite ends up there eventually...

Well if it makes it to 148 , I am sure that the reception will be a problem there just like it is at 129 NOW. So I feel sorry for anyone who has to use it for their hd locals.

If there is a Ciel-2 launch failure, I doubt Echo5 is going anywhere, so I"m not paying too much attention to the approval at this point because it's all waiting on Ciel-2's outcome.

There is no application to move EchoStar 1 at this time.

If Ciel-2 is successful, then EchoStar 1 will not be needed anywhere else, and EchoStar 5 will move there to "cover the even transponder licenses" (which will only used for testing purposes) and provide backup in case EchoStar 1 dies the same way that EchoStar 2 did.
