EchoStar And Gemstar-TV Guide Sign License And Distribution, Asset Purchase, And Sett

I seem to remember someone saying that Charlie (or was it one of the tech chat guys) said that they were working on name-based recording and should have it out "soon".

Of course, it all depends on your definition of "soon".

I don't think this changes the regular guide that's part of each receiver (although, hopefully, it will make the listings more accurate and/or timely). TV Guide is trying to add more content to their listings channel with interviews and "What's On"-type features that they're hoping to get more viewers for.
That's a winning opinion. For those who disagree, try reading the press release - or read it again if you missed
The TV Guide Channel recently introduced a broad range of new programming, on-air branding, studios and talent, establishing the network as the premier destination for TV viewers who seek recommendations and information on the best programs, hottest stars and latest trends on television. With its vast library of interviews and exclusive behind-the-scenes access, TV Guide Channel provides viewers with a rich array of program information and recommendations to help them make the most of their television experience.

And now there is content for Channel 102, and a reason why the unlaunched DVR instruction/info channel was moved away a few months ago.

Watch this space, at about 119 degrees West.

There are already two scrolling guide channels - one for sports and one for PPV. What's one more channel we won't watch? At least with that tiny video box it shouldn't take up too much bandwidth.

If it makes the information in the EPG more reliable then so be it. Also the TV Guide channel would probably be heavily compressed anyways. Perhaps if they had themed TV Guide Channels as a channel number in the respectful placed people would not have to wait so long to look through all the channels, just the ones with movies, locals for your area, basic stations, etc.

We have a few of those now. You can also set up favorites lists.
