It looks like this new Infotainment OS from Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is inspired by Tesla's. Steve Jobs would be proud…

Related, Hyundai / Kia are upping their software game, probably in future models though rather than most of the existing ones.

Not the target buyer since its a midsize, but I can see this doing decently well for younger males, and parents buying it for their kids as their first Vehicle (or first EV).

Definitely not a lightning replacement, nor was it really meant to be.

I do wish they had brought back the Ranger nameplate for it however.

Lotta baggage on that name, "Ranger." At least for those of us that bought them in certain years for our companies.

Hard to fathom. Evidently people there don't remember the name Edsel. "Fathom" carries just about as much excitement.

Have we run out of car names? They retreaded "Ranger" from a 50s Edsel car model to a 60s-70s big pickup submodel to an 80s-90s minipickup....

Odd dynamics out of our gov't- discouraging EV adoption whilst taking actions resulting in greatly increased liquid fuel costs. Is this what's good for GM? For anyone?
Well, we now know what opinions our government has about EV owners, they have been made clear. Odd considering how the demographics for EV ownership tends to not really favor a party; plenty of Red and Blue owners here, for example. I'll stop there.

If the Fathom comes in capably equipped at the announced price it sounds good. I've seen too many pre-production prices inflate greatly once the vehicle is released. At least they didn't dig back and call it a Fairlane or Fairmont.

Just sticking with ranger would have been better...like they did with maverick, mustang and bronco. Or maybe Fairlane Victoria.

I guess we'll see in a little over a year as the first deliveries are scheduled for 2027 Q4. I'm not its target audience, so what I think would be cool isn't what it should look like or come equipped with.
  • I'd like to see a frunk with the opening down to the bumper, like on the F-150 Lightning.
  • I'd also like to see a sloping nose, not a vertical wall projecting "this is a truck" to the World.
  • This should be efficient, not wasteful.
  • NEMA 5-20 and NEMA 14-50 receptacles in the frunk and cargo bed should be standard, but I understand that makes it hard to meet their price target. The more utility that this Fathom can provide, the better.
  • I hear the Fathom will have a trick back that will allow the bed to be extended into the rear of the passenger compartment, but the window and wall will swing up, shielding part of the bed. We'll see…
  • For the price and target demographic, a plastic bed liner will probably be used. Drain holes would be nice, as would slots in the sides for cleats and other tie-down accessories.
This is a big bet by Ford. I had thought that they were going to go with Android Automotive OS, but it sounds like they're partnering with Apple for the native navigation. Allowing CarPlay Ultra would be the first domestic manufacturer supporting it.

This has to succeed so Ford can then justify the 2nd generation Mach-E and other EVs based on this Universal platform.

It is handy on a truck platform. My silverado has it that way and it makes it alot easier to use the frunk.
I'm surprised that the Rivian R1T didn't do this, but it's understandable from a body stiffness standpoint, it's easier to stiffen the front if it's unbroken side to side. I think since Ford is going with Gigacasting the Fathom, it should have the necessary rigidity.

As for the Going with Apple Maps, I'm kinda surprised .... as long as they don't go with GM to the Android Automotive OS ... then again, as long as you can Choose your Maps, I'm good with that.

I'll stick with the Android Auto .... Google Maps, they seem to know what they are doing, they get me too and from place to place when out of town fine.

When I got my '23, it came with Nav from Ford ... I never use it, wait, it did come in handy the one time when I had no signal for a 1/2 mile.

I do wish they had brought back the Ranger nameplate for it however.
Much to everyone's chagrin, Ford goes through periods of a twisted desire to have all model names start with the letter F. Some will remember the Five Hundred (based on a Volvo design), Fairmont (with a Futura submodel), and Freestar.

Heads probably rolled that they didn't beat Nissan to Frontier.

Fathom sounds like something that is starting six feet under. Unfathomable!
