I recently took advantage of one of the promos that Dish was running (free HD DVR...). The installer came out last Sunday and installed my 622 (for another TV). It was dead the following day. The fan was running constantly and the lights on the front panel were blinking and there was nothing on the screen. Called dish, said that the would send out another one. I asked if they could just send me a 222. I didn't really need the DVR for this particular set up, plus if I decide later I want the DVR funtaionality, I would just attached an EHD (after paying the $40). The 222 arived yesterday, hooked up the cables, plug it in, nothing! It's dead. Doesn't even turn on (tried multiple outlets, nothing). Call dish again. The said that they would overnight me another 222k (waived the $25 shipping fee for overnight), and offered me $10 credit for the next 5 months for my troubles. I go up later to pack up the faulty 622, and I notice the 222's lights are on. Turn on the TV, go through the check switch process, and everything works! Called dish to cancel the RMA, said that it's too late, I should just send the new one back when it comes (didn't mention anything about the $50 credit).

It took a good 20-30 mins for the 222 to power up for the first time. I'm guessing that's not normal. After I got it to work, I powered it down, unplugged it, plugged it back in, and it turned on right a way. Should I just keep it, or send it back when I get the new one (assuming the new one turns on right away)?

FYI, the 222(K) DOES NOT have EHD capability at this time. Only the 211(K). We've been waiting for it for well over a year, but nothing has ever happened...and I doubt it ever will.

Really? What's the USB on the back for? Why does the remote have all the DVR (record, pause...) functionality buttons all over it?

As on the 222K brochure..."for future use". Remotes for all VIPK receivers are the same, DVR or not.

that blows! If I decide I need the dvr, might have to swap it out for a 212. Will they let me? Or is this something I should do now? I'm using the 222 in single mode, tv will only be used a few times a week.

I think you might regret not sticking with the 622. There is no 212. It's the 612. You can try, but normally you have to wait a year.

I switched from the 622 to the 222 because I didn't want to have to pay the $6/month dvr fee, since the tv won't be used much anyway (it's not the main tv). I thought that I could just add the ehd onto the 222 later if needed.

So should I just keep the 222 I currently have (even though it took 20 mins to power up for the first time)?, or keep the one dish is sending as a replacement?

if you don't need 2 tuners,
get a 211,
that way you add dvr function for the 1 time fee

Yeah, I really don't need the second tuner for this TV. Just spoke to dish tech support, first the guy told me that you can add an ehd to the 222, then he checked his notes and said it wasn't possible. They said that once they receive the 2 defective receivers back (bad 622 and 222), they will swap out the current 222 for the 211.
