Google announces Android event for February 2nd -- Engadget

Would be nice to hear some clarification on the roadmap, phone versions vs. tablet versions, Chromium fate, etc.

But I think this will be primarily the new CEO's event - Larry Page.

Andy may announce a new record in daily activations and Apple faithful will call it again goofy and resort to car analogy. The usual...:)

Andy may announce a new record in daily activations...Diogen.
Looking through the latest Canalys report, 33.3M Android phones were sold in the last quarter of 2010.

That ends up being around 33.3M*4/365, or ~365,000 per day.
Some of them would be replacements and some would still be on store shelves.
But this most likely is compensated by the activation dynamics during the quarter.

Bottom line - Andy will most likely claim something around at least 350,000 Android activations per day...

EDIT:
32.9M, not 33.3M, Android phones were sold in the last quarter of 2010.
But I don't think that changes the conclusion (about 1% correction).

Another interesting note, the smartphone market grew by 89% year on year.

That means to retain its market share an OS should have grown at least that much.
In reality nobody could accomplish that. Everybody lost market share.
Except Android.

While Larry Page get's his day to shine- Eric Schmidt hasn't dropped out of sight. Yesterday he admitted he was in private talks with Apple. In case you don't know Schmidt was also on the BOD at Apple from 2006 to 2009. His comment about the talks was that "it would be inappropriate to discuss the conversation; Steve Jobs is still the CEO and I hope he lives forever." When Steve Jobs was questioned about the private talks he also declined stating he was not going to discuss private conversations with anybody.

I find Page as a wiser version of Andreessen of the Mosaic/Netscape fame...
He knows exactly what he wants and was smart enough to step aside - for 10 years! - and let Schmidt step in when it was good for business.
Not many newborn self-made billionaires can do that.

But even if only half of what is written has been done over Schmidt's objections - creating Chrome browser, buying Android, Google Earth, leaving China, etc. - he should have been let go years ago.

Let Apple have him...:)

Although he strikes me more like a Gates type...

I believe tomorrow will be an important day for Google.

I picked up some shares when it bottomed at 599, hoping for a good swing from this event. Yesterday it popped to around 612 and I thought it would continue. So far today it has stalled. Rumor on the street is that they will reveal the new tablet OS. yawn!

Google expected to lift wraps on tablet OS
11:50a ET February 2, 2011 (MarketWatch)
MOUNTAIN VIEW (MarketWatch) - Shares of Google Inc. were up 0.3% to $613.05 Wednesday morning ahead of an event at the company's Mountain View, Calif. headquarters that is expected to unveil its new tablet operating system known as Honeycomb. The platform is expected to help Google build upon the success of its Android mobile operating system used in smart phones, which has become a key competitor to Apple's iOS platform that powers the popular iPhone and iPad. Tablets featuring Honeycomb are expected to hit the market later this year, the first being the Xoom by Motorola Mobility , which is roughly expected to launch before the end of March.

What would it take to have a thread not contaminated with your stock market crap?
Please tell...

Oh, I give it a better chance than seeing no more of your anti-Apple rants... :D

Anti and pro, being it Google, Apple, Microsoft, Sony or anybody else, is on topic.
Know what I mean?

And before we go any further, that was a rhetoric question.

That was fast...

Nothing groundbreaking, really...
Summary of the new UI features, CNN app (free), web-based market, more Android developer stuff...
Everything done on Xoom, no new hardware shown...
Probably prequel to MWC 2011...
No Larry Page or other brass...

The CNN app looked good. Probably an attempt to counter the Murdoch online paper.

It looks like I will be dropping this Ipad garabage and going with the Google honeycomb, the question from which manufacture should I get my tablet from?

The new market looks nice, but you'd think the log-ins would actually work at launch.
It has been worked out, the login part. And it's quite convenient.

Tried installing another VoIP app.
There is a ~2-3 min delta between pressing install and seeing the installation on the phone take place.

I'm on Nexus One, in Canada.
