Fill In Transmitters

Can PBS choose to not provide a livestream if someone is "outside transmitter range" but within the DMA?
when I get home I will try to see what happens where I am. We do not have a PBS station licensed to the Mankato DMA but I know I can view KTCA Minneapolis PBS no issues on the streaming service via the Roku. There are 2 more PBS stations in the outskirts of the Minneapolis DMA that are on satellite that are over 150 miles away. I'll see if I can view those. Can't do it now as the computer has location options locked off.
The whole KENW thing is goofy as technically they are not in the Albuquerque DMA so they shouldn't be on satellite there. But they complained when they got moved and was able to stay on the locals in that market and not the actual market they are part of.

And see that's what I think is tricky about this- KENW *is* part of (and proud to be) in the ABQ/SF DMA but we are outside their transmitter range.

I think the answer here is they COULD provide streaming access just like KNME does, but are they compelled to do so?

They seem to think they only have to provide access via satellite within the entire DMA. All things being equal, it seems like they should provide streaming access to every zip code in their own DMA (including mine).

actually they are not. The county they are licensed to (Roosevelt) is in the Lubbock, TX market but the issue is the translators there give folks a combination of Albuquerque and Lubbock locals but mainly Lubbock locals and KENW complained about being moved to the market when they use to be in the ALQ market due to having some translators in the ALQ market.

I think they *are* in our DMA.. they even credit Nielsen for putting them there..

The licensed station is NOT in the ALQ market. My post right above yours
They have some translators and they ARE in the ALQ market and that was their "gripe" to keep it in ALQ market. Satellite in theory can fine tune it to counties and parts of the county so only specific towns/counties get it but they didnt do it that way. Its everyone in the ALQ market

Seems I recall they used to "fill in" or do territory extension with "translators" on a different channel. That would avert the multipath issue. For a few years in the 70s the local ch. 31 would put up a split screen calling itself "31/71".

I live in Lubbock County and I could not view the KENW live stream.

So I am home and tried to get the other 2 PBS stations in the Minneapolis market and it won't let me stream them. I can stream the Minneapolis PBS (KTCA) and the Rochester, MN station (KSMQ) but not the other 2 in the Minneapolis DMA.

I goofed. It's the Amarillo DMA, not Lubbock. Looked at the list of which station is where and KENW isn't in the Amarillo DMA. They are just carried in the ALQ market

I was in Portales, NM ( home of KENW and Eastern NM University) over the holiday weekend and like most hotels had access to DirecTV. The local channels were strictly from Amarillo including their PBS station but no KENW. I literally could see the transmitter tower out my hotel window. I assume the situation would be the same with DISH. I do not stream TV.

I can see why you "goofed". Back in the 70's my relatives near Portales, NM could get the Lubbock TV stations with a tall antenna, not Amarillo. I thought these DMA's were still roughly configured based on OTA reception back in the analog days. It is a mess.

I remember that now, stayed in Portales during my nieces D2 Softball days... (they played ENMU from there and WT from Canyon)

This lends credence to the idea that they are in the Albuquerque / Santa Fe market, but why they choose to block us I still do not understand… they want statewide coverage via satellite, but won't allow people in those areas to stream. Bizarre

There are like 6 or 7 different zip codes around my area. I have to use one of the more obscure ones entered into my Roku tv, my Tivo, and for the Channels DVR guide for my HDHomerun 4k to get proper guide data. Using my exact zip code doesn't give me guide data for all the local stations. Crazy, but it is, what it is.

Is there anyway for you to change your zip code to a different close one that would work for you? Or does it just assume your zip code based on your IP address?

Of course, if/when KENW does allow us to stream, it'll piss off KNME, but AFAIK the law is the law... if they're both in the same DMA we have to receive equal access..
