Firefox 3.5

Not sure if it is Firefox or just a laptop that has been acting very cranky as of late, but I have had FF locking up a lot lately, and just not being very responsive. I run the darn thing all day long with multiple tabs. When this happens I usually close it, and then go into the task manager, and still have to end the FF process -- which often is as large as 700,000K - more than 1,000,000K.

I have no idea what is causing it to become such a hog in terms of memory - although I am thinking that Mafia Wars could be part of the problem (not sure though). As a result I have been running chrome more often as an alternative, and it seems to be more stable (at least on this machine) and faster in general.

Now that you mention it Firefox (3.5.2) has also been acting up on my PC. It seems to be crashing more often, usually when I have flash player running. Off topic, but I wish Silverlight would be adopted my more websites. Flash is to much of a resource hog.....

I have been using chrome almost exclusively for the past two days, and like it.

I switched to the developer channel, which has more features; including bookmark sync, and was able to import all my google toolbar bookmarks. But I wish it had Scrapbook and Zotero.

You all should drop Norton and go with AVG. It is much better at catching viruses than norton, even day 1 viruses.

Norton was bad, but AVG was a serious resourcehog. I switched to Sunbelt's Vipre, and have been very pleased; but I have also heard really good reports about the newest Norton, which supposedly is a LOT better.

I just wish I knew what was causing my FF to act so erratically.

I like NAV 2009 version...it's really not a resource hog at all. Sunbelt's CounterSpy is my anti-spyware/adware product of choice...I'd try Vipre, but I'm paid-up for 2 more years on my NAV subscription.

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling FF? Sometimes that fixes software issues...

I've had resource usage problems with AVG too, unfortunately. Guess I'll use 360 on my new W7 machine at home, like I must at work.

I use Addons to stabilize my memory resources

I'm using FF 3.5.2, and I can also see FF suck up several hundred K of memory if I have several tabs open with lots of content.

If you haven't already, I would HIGHLY recommend several of the addons which prevent automatically downloading or displaying many of the common web content delivery mechanisms.

Such as:

AdBlock Plus
NoScript
Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-Out (TACO)

Is a good way to keep extra content from filling up your memory space needlessly.

A little help, please...

I just installed FF 3.5.3. This is the first time I ever used any other browser then IE. My question is how do I "blacklist" web sites that I want to prevent my 19 yo son from going to? In IE8 I used the Internet Options, but with FF I haven't been able to figure it out. My son is not computer savvy, so I'm not worried about him defeating what I set up (he never got around the blocks in IE8). I just need to keep him from "porning up" my computer...
I running WindowsXP SP3. I have ZoneAlarm F/W, avast! A/V, and ThreatFire. I do have the NoScript plug in for FF.
Thanks for any help....
