I was looking at the Glorystar manual and it says that you may need to change the BER setting to LOG (logarithmic) in the Bird Dog meters. Would that be required or possible with the First Strike meters as well to pickup the weaker FSS signals? Or is the Bird Dog a better choice because it can and the First Strike can't (if it can't)?

This setting only applies to the BirDog and is not available in the FS menu settings. The sensitivity is not adequate on the BirDog unless this menu setting is changed.

If someone were wanting to buy a meter as a tool for their profession, I could not recommend the BirDog to anyone. To many false positives.

The best choice in my opinion is the Super Buddy. I have not tried the new AI Turbo S2 meter, but chomping at the bit to upgrade!
