For those who have Comcast Broadband and a Cord Cutter

Switch to the xFi Advantage Modem, $15 a month, no Data Caps.

Just did since my Contract was over, 1g speed ($90 a month) plus the modem ($15) and they give a auto pay discount (-$10) so a total of $95 a month ( I might get a better price since we have Charter in our town ).

So with Vue ($50 a month)-$145 a month total, to compare Dish Network ( Top 200 because of BBC America which I get with the Core package on Vue) and 5 boxes $119.99 a month just for TV.

I did price out getting TV from Comcast, $140 a month (with 1g Broadband and Preferred TV) but before Broadcast, Sports, franchise, extra taxes and Box fees.

I bought a Motorola with built in WiFi that can handle over a gig for 140 from Amazon. Works great Saving 15 a month .

Why would you pay them $15 per month when you can buy your own modem for less than $50 and never pay a rental fee?

Because I would then have to pay $50 a month for no data cap, also a 1G modem is a lot more then $50.

They would not move on the data cap charge (as they did my last contract).

And I do own my own modem, but for the extra savings I packed it away.

Only have a year contract and moving to Florida next year, will reevaluate then

In navigating the grande scheme of "cord cutting" and the like, I have come to the point where it's time to jumped ship. Comcast was really messing with my bill, QoS of my service and no "speed increases" in over two years or since I stepped down a tier. It looks as though many in my area are also not happy, which is worse for me since I put them on CC. Well as timing would have it a young lady happened on my doorstep pushing a new package (that I am seeing seems to be readily available), that is being offered in Centurylink areas where there's Fiber but nobody's biting. The main problem for my area, although this was several years ago, was that they installed and nobody at CL ever knew there was Fiber here much less what services and pricing there was or was going to be.

So after my bill creeping $5-7 a month with nobody able to tell me why, I have switched to Centurylink Gigabit Fiber for $65 a month "Price for Life", with Free Modem (ONT), Free Router (don't need one) and Free Install. 5 other neighbors found out I was jumping and jumped also even before I could get installed. A couple work from home and are so very happy that they dumped their company paid for CC Internet and are paying for their new services themselves to save them headaches. My next door neighbor who is on the end of the line with me is getting 900Mbps/900Mbps clean. I get installed on the 5th. Can't wait and I can continue to Beta test hardware even with their specific connection setup. Oh and with it the young lady is also now, as per my conversation with her boss, our area rep. And she's good.

So Buh-Bye Comcast. Now I have to subscribe to HBO on my own. Can't miss GoT. Even got the OREOs.

Yes. Just went over and saw my neighbors install and the gear they give you is pretty sweet. He's using and getting 900Mbps U/D, until he has the time to trial and error his own. I have to use mine off the top and am already to install it. Just have to see if it works which will be part of my "testing". So several wins here whether things work or not . . .

My only real concern in the exterior install. The exterior box which is bigger than I have found on line, needs to go on a specific place on the house. From what I heard, their Tech did whatever my buddy wanted with no issues and I'm far easier and less demanding on the interior part. That'll take 15-20 minutes max. Once all plugged in is when it'll take some time. We'll see . . .

I have my modem bridged to bypass the gateway and use my own router behind it. Unfortunately I am still required to rent their unit; they won't let me but my own DSL modem.

What he said. An ONT is an Optical Network Terminal, the interface between the fiber optics and the house wiring.

Yes there is..a ONT is a NID...its a network interface device...it hangs on the side of your house...the modem connects to it

What the article doesn't mention is why Comcast is mandating rental of this modem. What do they get out of it? Advanced data mining capabilities perhaps?

Does the data output of the ONT really need a downstream modem?

I question why they would modulate anything in a digital network. Multiplex yes, but not modulate.

I know they say they segment the data for the wifi hotspot customer, but I am always uneasy about my gateway being used for other people's traffic. If they do something malicious, am I responsible?
